The Masarang Foundation was founded in 2001 by Dr. Willie Smits. Masarang's mission is to save Indonesia's flora and fauna by empowering the local people. The foundation focuses on 4 main activities: Education - Such as giving out scholarships to students from less fortunate families and students with outstanding results, from different education levels. Reforestation - Large areas around Tomohon, such as the Masarang Mountain chain have been reforested by the Foundation, stopping the frequent floods and droughts in that area. The mix of trees planted contains fruit trees and sugar palms, that can provide income for the local people without them having to cut down the forest. Conservation - Protecting forests and rescuing, rehabilitating and releasing wildlife from the illegal wildlife trade. Wildlife Rescue Center Tasikoki - This is a department of the Masarang Foundation, that currently takes care of 350 animals that were rescued from the illegal wildlife trade.
