Hellooo, I'm Caroline Patricia. I just finished my education in Bachelor of Arts Interior Architecture in Taylor's University. While I just finished my studies, I want to do volunteering with AIESEC in Light's a Refugee's Dream project. I always feel that volunteering is something that I wanted to do because I love to help other people and knowing that I can make impact to them just make me very happy. When I was in semester 3, I have a CSI project to help these kids to renovate the library. I remembered when we finished renovate the new library, the kids were excited to be around the library and seeing them amazed and excited just make my heart melts , huhu. I enjoy being around kids and even want one since I was just a teenager, haha. What is Light's a Refugee's Dream Project?This is the first official volunteer other than school project that I had. I choose to focus on education for refugees kids because education equality is still minimal especially for them. However, Education is very important especially for children because their brain is still developing, and they still learning. By learning from knowledge to personal skills will determined their future and prepare them for the work-life and the society. In this project, I teach them math for year 5 and also joining the workshops for them. There are just the sweetest kids and I have many good memories with them. My heart still melts when they say Teacher Caroline, yet one of the student always call me Teacher Patrick from Spongebob because of my middle name, Patricia hahaha. Where this donation go to?We collaborate with Manna House Learning Centre to funding education on refugee children, provide them with internet data plans, utilities such as water and electricity bills, buy stationery and groceries to the family. I started teaching at Manna House Centre and immediately fell in love with the keen innocence and eagerness to learn of the children. Naturally each of them is different in their own way, meaning each one's learning method is also different. I have seen my colleagues and I dedicate our time and teach them and that has helped immensely. However, I cannot turn a blind eye to other factors with will affect their living as well as ability to learn effectively. These issues can be fixed with your financial support through provisions such as food, clothes and even stationery. It will all go a long way in assisting the children and their families who at times can barely survive. You and I can lend a hand to give them a chance to a better future. However, living in exile, refugee children are often denied normal childhoods.In Malaysia, 70% of 25,499 refugees under the age of 18 have not received proper education because there is no legal framework to solve their situation. Most attend schools which are sponsored by non-governmental organizations and even then, there are simply not enough available resources to provide all the children with their most basic needs. To make matters worse, many refugee families were severely affected by the pandemic.Refugee children in Malaysia are denied access to the formal education system, and thus obtain education via a limited number of community-based learning centres funded by Non-Governmental Organisations.

To make matters worse, many refugee families were severely affected by the pandemic.Let me introduce myself before my story begins. I'm Cha @ Chiam Siang Teng, a Taylor's University student who's currently in my semester break. In order to spend my long semester break, I decided to join AIESEC in Taylor University, which provided me with a project "Light A Refugee's Dream". My initial idea of joining this project was just to educate the children and make friends, but now … I've seized an opportunity to help them by raising funds for Manna Home Learning Center (MHLC), which accepts all refugee children, regardless of their nationality, race and religion.The reason why I am fundraising for these refugee children is because I hope it helps the centre to sustain its welfare and operations. It can furthermore improve education access and learning achievement among refugee children. Till now, I am still moved to hear the sweet voice of children calling me "teacher". It gives me a sense of pride and happiness where I'm able to bring a little impact to them. A brilliant smile often appears on their faces, which makes my day.To not let their smiles disappear from their faces, let's raise funds together! Every single money donated was really appreciated.       The pandemic has deeply affected us in many ways and some communities experience bigger impacts which includes refugees. The lives of refugees had already been difficult before the spread of the coronavirus because they lack access to basic necessities such as education and healthcare. Some at the young age of 8 or 9 are required to start working to contribute to their household income instead of enjoying their childhood like most of us. This has once again made me realize the privilege we hold, hence as an act to give back to society, I have chosen to start raising funds under the Aiesec LARD(Light a refugee's dream) program and this page would play as a platform for those who wish to contribute help these children. In light of raising funds for the refugees to receive proper education, I have started a challenge. The challenge is:-For every 100 ringgit raised I will run 2km.  The results will be recorded on the Nike running app and will be posted on my Instagram (ewnice_okn). As for the donation proceedings, donors can rest assured that all funds received will be processed by SimplyGiving. It should be noted that a 5% service charge will be billed from the total amount received and the remaining will be transferred directly to Manna House Learning Center.

Hey, I'm Tracy. Some of you may know me personally and some who found about this cause from other sources. I'll like to introduce myself first for everyone who visiting this site. I'm a local virtual volunteer for the Taylor's University AISEC's Light A Refugee's Dream program. I'm educating the year 4 children of the MANNA House Learning Centre (MHLC). I'm starting this fundraising campaign to do my part as a fellow human to help this children in need to able to obtain their necessities in this testing time. Due to the problems in their respective country a lot of people come over to our country to seek refuge. The children of this refugee's have a difficult time obtaining the sam quality of education as us Malaysian. I believe this factor should not hinder the children from obtaining the education their have the rights toward. What is MANNA House Learning Centre? Manna House Learning Centre (MHLC) is an education centre established by Manna House Center in conjunction with United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to cater for the education of refugee children. What is Light A Refugee's Dream (LARD) ? LARD is a project done by the AISEC in Taylor's University on an seasonal basis to increase the education level of the refugees at the same time empower. To motivate children and let them understand their responsibility in the society. To let the children be exposed to diverse group of people from different ethnicity and background. To raise donation and recruit volunteers for the refugee centre to ensure sustainability of the centres. What is AISEC ? AIESEC is a global platform for young people to explore and develop their leadership potential. We are a non-political, independent, not-for-profit organisation run by students and recent graduates of institutions of higher education. I am Kainen. And this is the story of how I came to set up this fundraiser: In my pursuit of a higher education and of a future career pathway, I realise that I am enabled by education - enabled, empowered and emboldened - to make decisions for myself, decisions that will ultimately carve out a pathway for me and help me find my place in this world. 'Education is the key' is a cliché because it is true; yet, for some, education is a privilege, and not a right. For marginalised communities like refugee children, education is not a given. Due to the lack of governmental efforts and legal frameworks on this matter, it is up to us to ensure that these children are provided with quality education, amongst other basic rights and necessities. How could we allow ourselves to live in a world which deprives children of the basic right to quality education? How could we allow any child to thread through this world without the opportunity of acquiring skills and knowledge from education? How could we say that we are educated if we do not try to provide educational opportunities to others? This is why I set up this fundraiser - to provide quality education to those who are brushed aside by our government. The pandemic era has made refugee children lives even more difficult in terms of gaining access to education, most families are struggling to make a living due to lack of financial support, most of the refugee children have to work in such a young age to earn money for their living. Besides, refugee children also have to face their struggles such as missing out their education as they are not allowed to enter Malaysia's government schools, so they can only obtain education through informal learning or community based learning centers. Moreover, language barrier has been one of the problems for refugee children to communicate with their teachers and the locals, this then shows how education is important to them.   As of the end of the December 2021, there are around 180440 refugees and asylum-seekers registered with UNHCR in Malaysia. There are around 155,400of refugees and asylum-seekers from Myanmar, the remaining individuals are refugees and asylum-seekers from 50 fleeing war and persecution, including 6,730 Pakistan, 3,720 Yemenis, 3,300 Syrians, 3,210 Somalis and others. Among them, there are 46170 children below the age of 18 (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Malaysia, n.d.).   From a refugee and activist from Myanmar, Htoon Htoon Oo, who is currently based in Malaysia now described a few issues faced by refugees in Malaysia: 1. Malaysia has not yet ratified the 1951 Convention Relation to the Status of Refugees. The absence of a legal framework for recognizing refugees and asylum seekers has caused problematic and exploitative conditions to them because they don’t have formal rights to work, no legal status, not benefiting from any legal protection and causes them to expose to the risk of arrest, detention, and refoulement. 2.They have limited civic freedoms. Although there are many different organisations of refugees available, however, when it comes to expressing their concerns and organising their struggles, the reality is that they are not able to do it freely. There is common fear among refugees regarding the consequences of speaking up about their struggle, expressing their concern, and claiming their rights. Besides, Htoon Htoon Oo also mentioned the challenges that the refugees and asylum-seekers are facing under the pandemic: 1.Refugees are forced to work for underpaid wages, take unpaid leave or resign just because their refugee status. Loss of jobs is also one of the challenges that they are facing. 2.Fear of safety. They are fear of being targeted by the police and immigration officers due to a lack of clear policies and awareness among law enforcement officials on what a refugee is. They might be fined by the police, or even detained at the police station for several days. 3.Most of the refugees are also facing mental health issues such as depression because they are mentally exhausted through thinking of ways just to survive and remain safe (CIVICUS, 2021).  Based on the information above, we know that the lack of legal absence has caused the children who are below 18 could not enter public schools in Malaysia. They could not enjoy the same benefits as any Malaysian does – Equality Education in Malaysia. I feel so sad for them as they were excluded by the society. ‘All men are created equal’, refugee children should get access to the same education as all other Malaysians too! Hence, this is the reason why I join the Aiesec Malaysia Light A Refugee’s Dream Project during this January 2022.   To help them to reduce their burden on surviving in Malaysia, it is encouraged that you could donate to us so that we could have enough fund to purchase stationery items for all the children, and even buy food for the all the families.   Reference: Civicus (2021).
