We probably have heard about autism through social media or even through some movies or tv series highlighting autism. However, nothing come close until you really experienced what a family goes through in handling this matter for person with autism. On March 19, I decided to try out the new Putrajaya MRT line. It was filled up as it was a free ride month on this new line. At one station from Serdang , a parent with 2 teens walked in and I immediately noticed one of the kid is not walking properly and fidgeting. Immediately I sensed the kid is with autism.  The parent and his brother immediately moved him to the side of the door and surrounded  him as no one seated actually gave way for the family to seat his autistic son.  Maybe they didn't know or just.Throughout the first 20 mins journey, I witnessed how the parent and his brother continued to hold him back and at times struggled as the kid gets distracted occasionally.  I could only imagine what this family is going through and only they know.  Some may comment why bring the kid out and that is why awareness is very lacking here in Malaysia. It was there I realized how little do we actually know about the family that cared for the autistic. The ones we saw on movies or tv series, they don't tell the real situation and at times oversimplify it. There are help available to assist families to manage the autistic situation eg counselling treatment or special trainings but most of these families are not able to afford or unaware of such facilities. Family with autistic person is a problem but the key problem is us not knowing what we can do better to support or help. Your kind contribution in any form goes a long way to assist them.Thank you.

We are a group of students from Tunku Abdul Rahman University College (TAR UC) to have a fundraising for  NASOM-The National Autism Society of Malaysia. NASOM is a non-profit, tax-exempt, non-governmental organisation conceived in 1986 by a group of parents and professionals. It is to offer lifespan services to people with autism through various services and programmes. NASOM is a national voluntary organisation with a mission to promote autism awareness, provide treatment, education, care and protection for PWAs, and support for their families. What is Autism? Autism or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), is a lifelong developmental disability that causes barriers to communication and understanding. As the name suggests, autism represents a spectrum of disorders, and is often characteristic by challenges with social skills, communication issues, relationships, and self-control. People with autism can vary from severely challenged to high-functioning. The way in which people with autism learn and think presents unique challenges for education, with their own particular strengths and weaknesses. The purpose for us to have this fundraising is to promote autism awareness and help out more the autism families. 100% of the funds will directly go towards our beneficiary.

Hi, my name is Nadeeya and I am a mother to a son, Arif who was diagnosed with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder) at a young age of 3 years old. He is a high functioning, mildly autistic child. With tremendous support from amazing therapists, society, family and friends, we are able to give the best therapy for him to get through his daily life well, and he has been progressing well too. This story however is not for him. We have been lucky to have the financial and emotional support to give good therapy for Arif, but that is not the case for many children living with ASD.Raising a child with special needs is not easy. We pour in sweat and tears and bringing up our children and try our best to give the best support for them to lead life as normal as possible. We have to have the upmost patience with them and not many of us have the skills to do so, which is why therapy is one of the best support we could give to our special needs child.Children with Autism are also almost always misunderstood by the public whom don't fully understand their condition, therefore an increase in awareness to the public is also something we need to look into.Furthermore, therapy doesn't come cheap. It costs a lot, sometimes to the thousands in a month, which not many families out there can afford too. This is where NASOM comes in. NASOM (The National Autism Society of Malaysia) promotes awareness to the public about Autism as well as providing education and therapy for those in need. Their goal is to provide affordable therapy and support for those with Autism and with this, continuous support and understanding is needed by the public. This way, persons with Autism can have a chance to get the proper support and therapy they need, especially to those whom might not be able to afford care. So I urge my fellow family and friends and the public to support this cause that is very close to me & Arif's heart, for the better life of all those with ASD around Malaysia.

I started my internship at an early intervention for autism centre in Gombak to complete my university graduation requirement. Before the internship, I had zero interaction with people with autism so I didn't know what to expect. Azri is currently 3 years old and, as a person with autism, hits his head with any object he could get his hands on. Autism is known to inhibit communication skills but many misinterpret this lack of speech as a sign of a significant cognitive disability. While some children with autism do have lower intelligence, others do not. This is why it is referred to as autism spectrum disorder—the problems with communication, intelligence, and behavior are highly variable, as I discovered in my work. In fact, many persons with ASD will dramatically improve with proper therapy and treatment. Too often, however, it is believed that persons with ASD will never get far in life. And, sometimes meeting an autistic child in person only serves to reaffirm this stereotype. My experiences working with people on the spectrum has led me to believe that we, as a society, need to develop a deeper understanding of autism, as well as empathize better with those living with the disorder. After all, we need to learn to accept differences in all people, helping others without judgment. I have chosen the National Autism Society of Malaysia (NASOM) @ Gombak as an effort to raise money because centre is currently facing financial problems. NASOM is dedicated to supporting individuals with autism and helping them lead meaningful and quality lives. Its mission is to advocate for the rights of people with autism and in doing so provide opportunities for them to learn and lead a productive and fulfilling life. The services consist of education and vocational/life skills training.

Hi,I'm Dzul, an avid runner with a dream to run in all World Marathon Majors. I've completed my first major in Tokyo Marathon in 2014 and next will be Berlin Marathon- 24 September 2017. The World Marathon Majors is a series consisting of six of the largest and most renowned marathons in the world. The races take place in Tokyo, Berlin, Boston, London, Chicago and New York City. I'm dedicating this Berlin Marathon 2017 (for every forward steps that I'll make in preparing and completing the run) to those underprivileged families with autistic child. My empathy is too strong with them. I have a son; Dzarif turning 4 this year who was diagnosed with mild autism at the age of 2.  Although he is low verbal, he is now progressing in phases through early intervention programs plus the supports that we have from our families and friends. We are lucky because we have the opportunity, the accessibility and the financial support for him. But i just wonder how about those lower income families with autistic child? I believe we should build the same support system as what my son has experienced. Same opportunity, same accessibility and same financial support!   I'm working closely with The National Autism Society of Malaysia (NASOM) to raise awareness and fund for those underprivileged families with non-verbal or low verbal autistic children.  Around 40-45% of children with autism attending NASOM programs are categorised as non-verbal, low verbal or with speech difficulties. But the cost of speech therapy programs is beyond reach of most children with autism who come from lower income families. Additionally, speech therapy is a highly specialised profession and there is a serious shortage of speech therapists in Malaysia. We are establishing special fund called 'Dzarif Dzulkaedah Fund' to address this, so that as many as possible children with autism who are non-verbal or low verbal like Dzarif regardless of their socio-economic challenges can get early speech therapy intervention. The Dzarif Dzulkaedah Fund will be administered by NASOM, and NASOM will source the speech therapy services to be offered to children with autism who meet the household income criteria, via NASOM centres nationwide. Thanks for your support!Love,Dzul

The Berlin Marathon, also known as BMW Berlin Marathon, is one of the World Marathon Majors event. First started in 1974, the event traditionally takes place on the last Sunday of September, before the Oktoberfest. It is one of the largest and most popular road races in the world. Berlin Marathon normally attracts close to 50,000 entrants of various abilities from over 120 countries, and over 1 million spectators. An avid Malaysian runner, Mr Dzulkaedah, is participating in the Berlin Marathon on 24 September this year with a special mission - to raise funds so that as many children with autism who are non-verbal or low verbal, who come from lower income families, can access speech therapy intervention services. Speech therapists are in short supply in Malaysia and the cost of speech therapy service is beyond the reach of lower income families.Mr Dzulkaedah has a 4-year old son with autism who is low verbal. So is my 20-year old son Naim. Around 50% of children attending NASOM programs are non-verbal or low verbal or with speech challenges. Parents know very well what it is like to have children with autism who have speech challenges. Children who come from lower income families are deprived of the opportunity to obtain speech therapy services because their parents cannot afford them. Please support Mr Dzulkaedah in his noble cause. All donations and sponsorship will go to a fund named in honour of his son - Dzarif Dzulkaedah Fund, administered by NASOM. It may be a little too late for Naim who is already 20 years old, but there are many more younger non-verbal or low-verbal children who can benefit from Dzarif Dzulkaedah Fund. As Chairman of NASOM, I sincerely hope that as many individuals and corporates, not only Malaysian, but also Germans and elsewhere, will support this noble cause so that every non-verbal or low verbal child, regardless of their socio-economic backgrounds can have access to early speech therapy intervention services.

All parents have a wish in common - for their children to receive formal education from primary schools to universities, make friends along the way, and become useful members of the society. Unfortunately, due to complex neurological disorders affecting the brain function, children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are different from other children. They are even different from each other. Without help at early age, many may not be able to attend schools. And many, even with help, may never get formal education. And many, may not have friends all their lives. There is no real place for many children with autism in normal schools, even in special needs classes. The schools are not equipped to teach and care for them. There are not enough places for everyone. Those with severe degrees of autism may not even be accepted anywhere. Many will not finish school. Many will not be able to progress to the next levels in a normal person’s life cycle. Many will not get jobs. Many will be dependent on family members all their lives. Parents cannot help but worry every single day about the future of their children with autism and what will happen when it’s time for them to leave the world.NASOM gives children with autism and their parents hopes for a better future. We have been doing it for 30 years. Our comprehensive and affordable lifespan services cover screening, diagnosis, early intervention, mainstream school support, vocational, sheltered workshop and therapy programs for children as young as 3 years old to adults over 30 years old. A number of them have been with us for over 20 years. We help parents to manage their children’s needs at home. We don’t pick and choose our students. We don’t turn away anyone, except those with serious medical conditions beyond our ability to handle. In the current economic scenario, many corporate and business donors are cutting costs and CSR budgets. The majority of our 20 centres nationwide are facing challenges to raise funds the traditional way to cover the cost of services at their centres. Without continuous charitable donation, contribution and support, we will not be able to continue to provide our services to 500 children with autism under our care and 1,000 parents.Your donation will be used to pay part of the costs of dedicated and caring teachers at our 20 centres nationwide, rental of centre properties, utilities, maintenance and upkeep, and teaching supplies so that we can continue to give hopes for a better future to our 500 students and their parents. NASOM is a non-profit, charitable NGO and a tax-exempt charity. We charge our parents affordable fees which are below our costs so that our services will be accessible to a growing number of children with autism in Malaysia especially those who come from low income parents.

AUTISM is a lifetime neurological disorder for which there is no cure. Lifetime cost of its treatment is high and beyond the means of low to average income families. Early diagnosis & intervention is best but quite often children with AUTISM will miss the opportunity due to lack of awareness, appropriate facilities & expertise, and parents ability to pay. As they grow older, youths & adults with AUTISM may not be able to lead an independent AND meaningful life due to lack of employment, support and vocational opportunities. More info, please drop by at : www.nasom.org.my/autism/ NASOM a non-profit, nationwide non-governmental welfare organisation which was formed/registered in 1987 by a group of concerned parents and professionals. NASOM is a non-profit, tax-exempt, non-governmental organisation conceived in 1986 by a group of parents and professionals. Registered on 3 March 1987, NASOM is a national voluntary organisation with a mission to promote autism awareness, provide treatment, education, care and protection for PWAs, and support for their families. NASOM currently operates 20 intervention centres nationwide and a one-stop assessment, therapy, intensive intervention and creative arts centre in Setia Alam.Lifetime cost of autism intervention and care is high and rising, and is beyond the means of low income families. This is due to the high ratio of teacher/caregiver to the number of students/children with autism, and specialised nature of the services. Children with severe conditions may even require a 1-to-1 dedicated support. NASOM offers comprehensive autism treatment, care and support services at affordable rates, which are way below our actual costs, so that our services are accessible to the growing number of PWAs in Malaysia. We can only achieve this with generous and continuing support from all parties. Without your donation and support, many PWAs and their families may not have the chance to improve their quality of life.
