About Appeal

How have you been? Finally, I was able to quiet down my heart to write and update my life with you. The year of 2020 has been a year of drastic changes and adjustment. I pray that you will find hope for a future and rise above of all that is taking place at this time.

I am currently working in a church sponsored boarding school teaching Bible and English to high school students. I have been teaching there for about 6 years. I remember when Covid hit Tawau, due to poor internet connection in my living area, it made teaching more challenging as I needed to think of ways to connect to students with a limited storage mobile phone and poor internet connections. It was indeed a sharp learning curve for me. Being unfamiliar with technology, the number of hours I spent figuring how apps worked was likely more than what people normally need. I remember when I first entered this workplace, I was nervous not knowing there was so much adjustment to be made as you need to be flexible, highly self-discipline and mentally tough to face changes and work-related challenges.

Working in this school, I am thankful that I had the opportunities to teach and mentor students, train them in public speaking, drama, debate, and as master of ceremony. It is a joy to see them improving in their academic performance and growing with a positive attitude in learning.  Teaching is emotionally challenging. Through experience from mistakes and failures, I learnt how to love and accept my students yet not losing my expectation for them to grow. In addition to classroom teaching, I am also shouldering responsibilities as school articles editor and scholarship coordinator. Teaching requires high flexibility and resilience as things were in constant flux. Now I am calmer when facing challenging situation. I am glad to be exposed to those challenges and I always have something new to learn out of it.

Career change?

Reflecting on those years of services, I asked myself “What am I passionate about and what did I find emotionally fulfilling?” I started thinking about my experiences of taking care of my family members in the hospital when they were ill and witnessed people who are seriously ill. Things related to health always capture my attention. At times, people would ask me about health-related issues. As a person who is proactive, loves to teach and help people to get better, sensitive, observant, empathetic and result-oriented, I think nursing would suit my innate desire to help people to attain better physical and mental health.

Why did I not continue in Nursing when I graduated?

Yes, I graduated from National Taiwan University with a Bachelor’s of Nursing in 1992. Being zealous in spiritual growth and actively involved in Campus Crusade student leadership movement while I was studying in university, I felt called to full time ministry with Campus Crusade for Christ and I spent the next 25 years in full time mission service instead of pursuing nursing.

Why not continue in teaching?

It was actually very rewarding time in my past and current positions as I am still impacting lives in different ways. I believe all those past working experiences I gained will provide me the skills needed to be a nurse. Yes, I love teaching young people but with health care I can reach out to a much wider range of age groups and I have a special empathy for helping and serving older adults. Is it too late to go back to nursing? A quote I once saw “Although you might face some extra difficulties at 50 or 60, I believe human brain has astonishing ability to learn whatever your age.” I believe that it’s never too late to start all over than not moving forward.

My need

Even though I have a Bachelor’s degree in nursing, I have been away from nursing for nearly 28 years. I need to return to school and complete a 3-year nursing program to refresh my nursing skills and be brought up to date on all the advancements in nursing that have taken place. Serving in missions and teaching in private schools have been so very rewarding with impacting lives and learning about who I am. However, as great as wonderful as all those years have been, they were not necessarily financially rewarding to set aside a savings for me to study in nursing school in America. I have been accepted by a university in United State for an Associate Degree in Nursing. The total amount that I need to raise is US$105,000 to cover room and board, tuition, books, and other expenses. The program will begin in August 2021.
