Each of the gibbons at the facility is at a different level of recuperation and has various demands, with some requiring 24-hour care as the team takes on the role of surrogate mother. Most will require more than five years to develop the essential abilities to be released back into the wild safely. Wildlife are not pets, they belong to the wild. This Endangered Species Day, we would like to talk about one force that is driving some of our precious wildlife towards extinction, that is the illegal wildlife pet trade. The demand for wildlife continues to increase with the growth of social media usage. When people share photos or videos of the wildlife they kept as pets on social media, they attract attention, followers and encourage more people to do the same. But the wildlife pets you see on social media didn't just appear in front of their doorstep. All of them have been through trauma and many have died along the way to get one delivered to the buyer. These wildlife are not domesticated like our dogs and cats. Many cases of wildlife pet attacking their owner we see on the news can be easily avoided if we, humans understand the simple fact that wildlife, however tamed they may seem, are wild animals and belong to the wild.

Malaysia is home to 5 species of gibbons, all of them are endangered and on the IUCN’s Red List of Threatened Species. Gibbons are considered “lesser apes”, but they are often confused with monkeys because of their similar size. Gibbon are apes in the family of Hylobatidae and the easiest way to tell them apart from monkeys is the absence of a tail.Like many primates, their biggest threat is a loss of habitat from deforestation, but they are also threatened by illegal wildlife traders capturing and selling gibbons to people who want them as pets. Gibbons aren’t not meant to be pets, they need to be in the wild, swinging from trees, amongst other gibbons. To trap one baby gibbon, poachers often have to slaughter a family of upwards to 10 because they will fight to the death to save their family.Gibbons Conservation Society is the only NGO in Peninsular Malaysia that is dedicated to gibbon conservation. The main purpose of their project is to support the Gibbon Rehabilitation Project to rescue, rehabilitate and release Gibbons and other primates that have been rescued from the illegal pet trade. This society highly depends on us as public to keep their rehabilitation project going especially during this COVID-19 pandemic. Thus, if you have means to do so, let’s work with us helping Gibbons Conservation Society in gibbons rehabilitation by donating any amount of money to keep Gibbons healthy and well fed. No matter how large or small the donation, every little will makes a difference and gets Gibbons one step closer to being released back into the wild.

We are a group of concerned individuals who are very concerned with what the current situation has severely impacted , the gibbons. The Gibbons Conservation Society cares for the well being of 12 white handed Gibbons and 8 guard dogs. The Gibbons regularly consume about 18 kg of fruits and vegetables and they are currently doing their best to ration out accordingly. The help from the government is needed however , they are currently focusing on helping humans. The animals deserve to be treated the same way and they also deserve enough fruits and vegetables to consume daily. Any amount of donation would be highly appreciated.
