We are Jack (team leader), Jaden, Gabriel, and Martin, four year 12 secondary students who are going to hike the full 100km MacLehose trail, the longest trail in Hong Kong, spanning from one end to the other. Not only is that really far, but there will also be 5,053m of elevation gain... for perspective, the hike from base camp to the top of mount Everest has only 3,489m of elevation gain! We will do this over three consecutive days from the 27th-29th of March. We will be donating money to the Child Development Center, a non profit organisation dedicated to helping young children with special needs to get personalised education, assessment, and therapy. They help children anywhere on the wide spectrum of special educational needs, including those with learning difficulties, developmental delay, autism, Down’s syndrome and physical disabilities. They even help educate parents, helping them with anything they might need when raising special needs children. This organisation is very close to Jack's heart, as he has a younger sister with downs syndrome, and understands the difficulties that families face when raising and educating special needs children to reach their full potential, which is something that every child deserves. Money donated to CDC will go towards programme and service expenses, allowing them to aid even more families, and provide even better care with their top notch teaching specialists and therapists. Furthermore, it is no doubt that under the current COVID-19 pandemic, non profit organisations like this will be impacted the most, so any money donated will be especially helpful now more than ever. We would really appreciate your support on our journey and cause!

The Child Development Centre

Hi Everyone! As many of you been asking me what I want for my birthday, I have come up with a small birthday project. The Child Development Centre (CDC) is launching a new service, "Bright Start", which aims to provide school-based integrated support for pre-school students. In essence, the CDC will send its staff to pre-schools which need our service, and provide the support needed during school hours.I am pledging to donate HK$100,000 to this meaningful initiative, and would like to ask, that in lieu of presents, please consider making a donation to my little project instead. Together we can all make a difference in the lives of many special needs pre-schoolers in Hong Kong!About "Bright Start"Inclusive practice in kindergartens supports the rights of children to participate actively in their natural learning environment within their communities. "Bright Start" will support all stakeholders in the child’s life, including but not limited to the child’s learning, peer interactions, parents’ journey, and teachers’ capacity to implement inclusive practices and differentiated instruction.   - Partner with two pre-schools- Provide early identification screener for all the children in that pre-schools- Provide two parent talks/workshops for each school- Provide two training workshops for the teachers- Provide 20 sessions of 1-hour school-based integrated support to the two pre-schools, aiming to support 3 to 5 children with SEN for each school- Project duration: 1st Nov 2018 to 30th June 2019Discover more about the CDC on https://www.cdchk.org/   Charity IRD No. 91/1579

Rob and Isla are leaving Hong Kong on the 11th of December, and as one last hurrah, before they leave, in lieu of any leaving gifts, they are asking friends, family and colleagues to donate to a Hong Kong Charity - the Child Development Centre, as a way of giving back to the City that has brought them so much joy over the last 5 years (or 32 years in Isla's case and some formative ones for Rob).  They have chosen this charity each for different reasons:Isla's mother, Amy Hughes, ran the Matilda Child Development Centre when Isla and her brother were just children, and they spent a lot of time at fundraising events or in the centre itself after school.  The Centre was the first to integrate typical and SEN (Special Educational Needs) children into group sessions in Hong Kong.  During her time there she helped mould and grow the organisation further developing their early intervention programmes for children with individual needs/SEN from birth to six years of age.  In the year 2000 the MCDC (as it was known then) provided combined services for more than 120 families.  After Amy moved on from the centre the MCDC has changed premises (hence dropping the Matilda) and grown, offering even more support for families and children across Hong Kong.  Please take a look at their website if you would like to learn more about what it is they do today.  Having had such a close connection to the Charity, Isla and Rob are confident the money donated will be used efficiently and effectively to provide the CDC's quality services to the families and children in Hong Kong who need these most.Rob's Uncle Dave is Down's Syndrome and was born in 1966, at a time when very little support and help was offered to families with children with individual needs/SEN. Initially Dave was not expected to live beyond 21 years of age and it is testament not only to his immediate family's dedication to him, but also to how the growth in understanding and medical development has ensured that Dave has happily passed his half-century, still a big fan of ten-pin bowling, pints and salt & vinegar crisps - of special mention is his love of Hong Kong when visiting Rob's family during their first stay. Though Dave is a hug-loving, kind and now slightly temperamental uncle, we can only imagine how much easier his and his family's life could have been had he had the sort of support offered by the CDC.Both Isla and Rob have spent some time working with charities before and during their stay in Hong Kong, with children and SEN, however we've found it difficult over the past couple of years to contribute as we would like and so as we leave, we'd like to make up for those few years by giving something to a charity that means a lot to us.Please join us and donate to a worthy cause.
