This World Refugee Day I have set myself a personal challenge to raise funds and awareness about refugees and asylum-seekers in Malaysia. For this challenge I will be aiming to complete 5km on a treadmill everyday (after work and child duties), starting on World Refugee Day (20 June) and until the last day of the month. If this does not sound challenging enough, I will be listening to my least favourite singer's music - Justin Bieber. And, I will make sure not to touch a drop of wine or alcohol for the entire time too. If you know me, you will also know this is going to be HARD!Ok - so you are a fan of Bieber? Fine, I will not hold it against you. You can make a request for one day for me to listen to your least favourite singer, but it will cost you a donation! Please support me by donating to my challenge and help me spread the word. All funds raised will go towards MSRI, a grassroots organisation that I am proud to be working for. The money will be used to ensure the organisation can continue to deliver its education, family health and emergency programs, building capacity and resilience in refugee and asylum-seeker communities in Malaysia.Thank you!

Hi there! My name is Sydrah, and my friends and family know just how much I love arts. I started drawing since I was a kid and have spent growing up developing my own style. You can check out my page here:   https://www.facebook.com/sydriyaart/?fref=nf During my time in Sydney, I met a refugee artist who is quite well-known for painting using coffee as a medium. I was so inspired, that I decided to give it a try, and who would have thought that I would soon discover my own niche as well! If you haven’t known it already, World Refugee Day is celebrated on 20 June every year as a way to promote inclusivity and understanding of refuges around the world. So, as part of MSRI’s World Refugee Day Challenge 2016 initiative (which will be from 13-30 June), I will produce 1 coffee painting a day, for the entire of 18 days. If you like my work, you may feel free to contribute any amount deemed reasonable via this Simply Giving page. I’m pretty much selling art here, with the only difference being that the money being made will 100% go towards giving support to the refugee and asylum seeker communities living around the Klang Valley. Just to give you an example: - Your RM50 donation can be used to buy basic groceries for one family. - Your RM500 donation can be used to support one refugee with a chronic disease (heart problem, surgery, etc) in getting hospital treatment. So here's how it works:- If you donate RM15, you'll get a postcard with any of the paintings I made throughout this challenge printed on it.- If you donate RM30 or above, you can request whichever painting you'd like to be on the postcard, together with a poem. If you REALLY like my work, and are willing to donate RM200 and above, then you can select any of my artwork (large-sized) that you’d like to keep. How does that sound? :)

On June 6th I began fasting (no water or food) for 12 hours during the day, like most of my colleagues and members of my host community. It’s currently the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, during which more than 1.5 billion people are celebrating around the world. I am fasting to raise funds for MSRI, where I’m currently interning, to support the many essential services they offer to refugees and asylum seekers.             The reality that many in this world have inadequate access to water and nutritious food is motivating me to challenge myself. As a result of my positionality in this world of systemic inequality, the likelihood that I will ever experience real hunger or thirst is slim. I often, however, complain that I am hungry or thirsty but my livelihood and health are never at risk. I take my easy access to water and food for granted while many are struggling for these two basic human needs and rights.   All the funds raised go directly to MSRI to support their valuable work and services they offer. Please support this cause. Any contribution would go a long way.     One of my favourite local meals (see picture above) is Roti Canai which costs ~$1.00. Even a dollar would help. Please Donate today! You can also choose your own challenge to raise funds for MSRI and World Refugee Day.

For people who know me, I am known to love dancing and the occasional recording of Dubsmash videos. And when I hear my favourite tunes being played, I can't help but sing and dance to it. So when I heard about this challenge to raise money and awareness during World Refugee Day, I thought why don't I take what I love doing for my friends and family, and share it with the outside world. Pretty scary! So The Dare To Dance Project is now on! I hope donations will be made to MSRI, an NGO that does so much good for the refugee community in Malaysia; and I hope that some smiles (and most likely laughs) will be brought to all who will see what I do. This project starts on the 13th June and will run for a full month until the 13th July! You will be able to see all the videos up on YouTube. Check out my 'welcome' video at https://youtu.be/HrDGllEJO84How does it work?It is very simple. All you do is donate, any contribution is welcomed, then depending on the amount that you have donated, I will go to a place in KL, Malaysia (preferably where people are in a queue), play that specific song and dance away! It will not be a full song unless it is one of the highest campaign perks (see below). Everything will be documented so you will know that the 'Dare' has been done after your generous donation has been received. The higher the donation, the more you can receive special perks. Tier 1 - Donate RM50You can choose a song but not the whole song will be playedTier 2 - Donate RM100You can choose a song and I will dance to one minute of itTier 3 - Donate RM200You can choose a song and I will dance to two minutes of itTier 4 - Donate RM300You can choose a song and I will dance to three minutes of it (which is on average the length of an entire song)Tier 5 - Donate RM500 (The Biggest Perk!)You can not only choose a song, but you can also choose the location! PLUS I will dance to the entire song!Group donations for the biggest perk are more than welcome! For those who just want to donate for the cause without any 'Dare' being done is also welcomed. Just a few guidelinesSince this is all going to be done in public, please choose a song that is appropriate for the general public. It is also during the month of Ramadan and we all must remember to be respectful to each other, whichever time of the year. Choose a song that brings a smile onto your face (for example like the song Happy or the Frozen song). If I feel that an inappropriate song has been requested, I will contact the donor and we will negotiate on selecting a different song. Because of your generosity I do want contributors to be more involved. Where does the money go to?All the generous contributions collected through this SimplyGiving website will be sent directly to MSRI and will be used to assist their programmes that help the refugee community in Malaysia. You can view more on their programmes at http://msri.org.my/v5/sahabat-programmes/sahabat-support-centre/Examples of how your donations can help!- Your RM50 donation can be used to buy basic groceries for one family. - Your RM500 donation can be used to support one refugee with a chronic disease (heart problem, surgery, etc) in getting hospital treatment.Since it is also part of MSRI's challenge, you can see more info at http://msri.org.my/v5/get-involved/events/world-refugee-day-challenge/ For more information you can contact me at [email protected] or send me a message on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/thedaretodanceproject/. And for anyone wherever you are in the world, especially to those who love to dance, join me! I DARE you to DANCE!In advance, THANK YOU!!#thedaretodanceproject#worldrefugeeday#whatyoudomatters

Hello there!I have been with MSRI since April 2015, starting as volunteer and intern. Now MSRI trusts me as one of their Counselors in the clinic. As a counselor, lending my ear for the refugee to hear their struggles and  maintain their psychological well-being is my main job. After one year I am being a companion for the refugees, I feel I need to step out from the counselor room and do more!. I am working together with MSRI to provide the necessary help for my clients, but sometimes lack of funding stops us.Hence, I want to challenge myself to run for at least 3 KM per day from 13th June to 24th June for the refugees and for my own health of course! Hopefully by doing this I can generate some money which of course will be given fully to the refugees! I will post pictures of me doing this everyday as the "empirical evidence" and I will do my best and pray for the rest!Thank you for reading my story!Ronald

If anyone knows me, they know I'm a complete sugar addict. I will give up finishing my main dish so that I can have dessert. I will be the one to suggest, not the coffee break, but the chocolate/lolly break. And then I will complain about how much sugar I've been eating and how bad it is for me! So this time I'm taking real action, for a good cause.I'm currently working for the Malaysian Social Research Institute providing legal aid to some of the most vulnerable refugees and asylum seekers in Kuala Lumpur. I need your help so that we can keep delivering a high standard of services and expand those to fill the needs of our beneficiaries. Enjoy watching me painfully decline dessert, lurking at a cake stall, or walking back and forth in the lollies alley of Jaya Grocer. Don't mind me, I'll be the freak drooling in front of Natural Confectionery Snakes. GET DONATING! #jqsformsri

Hi,I am working as volunteer Coach and Consultant 4 days a week leading the MSRI Ahead project. Better client services and a more diversified funding base are key objectives. The funding has not kept pace with the increase in services. And a lot of refugees (mainly from Middle East) are still on the waiting list. Better branding is considered a must to attract more funding and donations. We have started a project New web site and are making progress in shaping our new branding. My challenge is not only to lead this project, but also to raise money for the design of the new website. If we are able to raise around RM 15 000, then we can start the design. The new website will be operational in approx. 3 months after we have confirmed the order with the vendor. My life is about sharing my energy and experience with those who need. But I cannot do it on my own. Your financial support is needed.Together we can help MSRI to attract more funding to serve more refugees !June 20 is World Refugee Day, a good opportunity to do a little extra for the refugees.Alexius

If you know anything about me, you know that I'm a girl who LOVES her food. And Kuala Lumpur has some of the most delicious food I have ever come across. Indian breads with spicy curry dip and sweet cucumber salad. Sizzling mee goreng noodles steaming with oil and hot chilis. Coconut ice cream, homemade, and pedaled out by busy street vendors, with coconut juice, served fresh in the lobbed off fruit.  Now why, might you ask, after only a few weeks in KL, would I decide to fast during daylight hours for 30 long days? Because for me, it is a choice. And that is a privilege. And my goal, through this internship, is to examine my own privilege, and to challenge it in every context possible. Ramadan starts on June 6th, and lasts for 30 days. It includes daily fasting (no food and no water) from dawn to sunset as well as increased religious observance and self-reflection. Through this challenge, I hope to gain a better understanding of Malaysian culture, which is predominately Muslim, while also experiencing what it means to be truly hungry. Because this is something that many of the refugees that I am working in close proximity with feel every day. The exception is that for them, there is no end in sight to their suffering. The money raised through this challenge will support MSRI to deliver essential services directly to refugees. They need the financial support. I can do something to help. And so can you. Please donate whatever you can. My goal is 3000 ringgits, which is $1000.00 Canadian dollars.Thank you so much for your support!
