Projek BacaBaca works with children from B40 households by providing them with individual, tailor-made reading sessions to enable them to read at grade level. A dedicated reading coach works with one child to read in Bahasa Melayu and English. This project was developed to support children in catching up on the learning they’ve lost due to COVID-19.

My Story

Projek BacaBaca is a volunteer-based initiative established under Taylor's University School of Education and led by a group of passionate individuals aiming to tackle learning poverty in Malaysia. Individual, tailor-made reading sessions in English and Bahasa Melayu are provided to children aged 6–9 living in poverty to enable them to read at grade level. I am honoured to be one of the reading coaches that has been helping children from the B40 households since April 2022 this year and am excited to see the progress that we have made throughout the 7 months up until now. We are currently raising awareness in the community to support children's literacy by either volunteering to be a reading coach or donating any amount of funds that one can afford. We hope that by raising both awareness in terms of funding and volunteer work, we can work towards improving children's literacy in Malaysia.
