Tabung KIF

Background of me and ProjectEd

Throwback to July 2019, I got to know about ProjectEd from Nelson (founder of ProjectEd) through a presentation he was conducting about higher education in Malaysia. I was instantly hooked by ProjectEd, amazed at how significant an impact university students can make to national tertiary education.

I’ve managed to gain a lot of life-long experience volunteering with ProjectEd. From managing my first website, volunteering to share university experiences with high school students from rural areas, interviewing future ProjectEd scholars, meeting people from diverse backgrounds to leading ProjectEd now!

However, I acknowledge the fact that I am able to gather these amazing experiences under a safe roof with no financial distractions, and that really shines a light on the less privileged high-school fresh graduates who have to work endlessly to make ends meet. Scholarships would be the first to come to mind as an immediate relief to their financially-challenged situations, especially when they want to pursue higher education.

KIF Scholarship

Scholarships have been the core of enabling scholars from B40 families to afford tertiary education, and that is what KIF (Knowledge is Free) scholarship is about: leveraging the power of the scholars crowd to fund potential B40 scholars to university!

The sources of KIF scholarship are primarily public donations (primarily scholars under scholarships), government grants, and corporate sponsorships. However, during this period of the economic downturn caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, ProjectEd's operations have been severely affected, shining the light on ProjectEd financial dependencies on external entities to bring impact to the higher education sector. Moreover, with the skyrocketing costs of tertiary education, the growth rate of funding has not kept up, leaving a gap of potential scholars without a scholarship (a golden opportunity to grow and shine under tertiary education) waiting to be filled.

Tabung KIF

KIF Scholarship has been up and running since the year 2018, and we are extremely proud of our 13 KIF scholars who have pulled through challenging circumstances and made it to university! Keeping financial sustainability in mind for all of ProjectEd’s decisions, we have decided to pivot from KIF Scholarship to Tabung KIF, our new student loan programme aiming to alleviate tertiary scholars’ financial challenges along with training programmes and opportunities for our scholars to shine brightest among the stars!

Tabung KIF started with a simple vision:-

To build up a financial cycle where scholars constantly give back to the foundation to continue funding the future scholars. For scholars, by scholars.

In conjunction with an extraordinary Chinese New Year celebration this year, I would like to politely request my peers to pledge 1% of your angpao money this year to close the education inequality gap with me for ProjectEd. For my close relatives/friends, your contribution to this cause I’m really passionate about would definitely brighten up my day and keep me going! (you may treat it as an e-angpao for me 😉)
Sedikit-sedikit lama-lama jadi bukit, with the collective effort of my friends and family, I wish our small yet significant effort can bring us one step closer to education equity in Malaysia.

FAQ

What is Tabung KIF?

Tabung KIF, the successor of the KIF Scholarship, is a brand new initiative by ProjectEd Malaysia to provide financial tools for Malaysian students to fully commit to their tertiary education with a fully paid-for student loan. We believe tertiary education is the golden period for scholars to fully develop their potential and to grow as a citizen to serve the country in the future. Hence, with Tabung KIF, we wish to unleash the full potential of each and every scholar by providing financial assistance as well as providing a comprehensive Scholars Development Programme (SDP) (details to be disclosed around early April) to help grow and nurture our future leaders!

How do I make sure my donation goes fully to support the cause?

Money raised for this fundraising campaign will go directly to ProjectEd Malaysia’s bank account. ProjectEd Malaysia will allocate the funds to ensure the smooth running of Tabung KIF.

I’m interested to learn more about Tabung KIF, what should I do?

Reach me at [email protected], or drop me a message on Whatsapp if you have my contact number :)

What resources does Tabung KIF need?

RM30K (including operating costs) is required for us to fund 4 final-year scholars of RM5K/year each. ProjectEd has successfully raised RM7.8K from our previous fundraising. Since we will start distributing the scholarship money in early September 2021, we aim to raise RM22.2K more by late July 2021. This fundraising is self-initiated fundraising by me and is independent of ProjectEd’s fundraising efforts.
With the goal of raising RM2.5K personally for ProjectEd, I wish I can help bring ProjectEd closer to achieving our fundraising goal by late July 2021.
