SUCCESS STORIES UNDER THE CARE OF PAFID

CHEONG CHOOI KWAN -17/4/1960 – 23/6/2021

  CUsersadminDownloadsWhatsApp Image 2021-12-01 at 73109 PM 1jpeg

The late Cheong Chooi Kwan was an orphan.

She was brought to us as a young child. Later, we tried to locate her relatives and managed to contact a man with the help of the police. However, this man told us that a friend had requested him to bring Chooi Kwan to our school and requested the school not to bother him as he had no blood ties with her.

Since then she received educational and vocational training at our school. After she had left our care, she was seen working at a vegetarian restaurant as a dish washer. She looked sad and angry; most probably being bullied. So finally she was sent back to us by the Sai Baba group.

When the sheltered workshop was set up at the end of 1991, she was admitted as a participant. She worked at the sheltered workshop doing contract work. She was happy and fitted in comfortably with other participants. The sheltered workshop and the school hostel was a home to her. The staff and all the participants were her family. Being one of the older participants, the staff and her colleagues fondly called her “ Che Che” meaning elder sister. CUsersadminDownloadsWhatsApp Image 2021-12-01 at 74321 PMjpeg

Over the past few years, as she grew older, her eyesight deteriorated and she could no longer see well. In May 2021, she was hospitalized at a medical centre and received good treatment using her own savings saved from her welfare allowance and wages from her contract work. She underwent an operation as her bedsores were turning bad. In her last week her condition got worst and she was in great pain and suffered in silence. She lost her appetite and gradually her strength left her. She has been silent throughout the ordeal. Eventually she was called home. It was indeed sad to see her go.

Cheh Cheh though an I.D. person was able to live independently and proudly. She paid for her food, lodging and personal needs. She paid for her operation and her own funeral expenses and still had some balance left to give back.

Our Respect and Salutation to Chooi Kwan. May you have ever lasting Love and Happiness with God.

***As the saying goes- “from the cradle to the grave”, that’s how we look after our unfortunate wards. Our association runs child care. The intellectually disabled infants as young as two months old can come with their mothers for lessons on early stimulation.

Lee  Yi Sheng is a bubbly 25 year old young man with Down Syndrome.  He enjoys taking part in dance activities as well as sporting activities and loves the attention he gets.

He started as a young student at Sekolah Semangat Maju Ipoh and continued vocational training at the Sheltered Workshop Ipoh. In 2020, we managed to find him a job at a factory as a general worker.  As his single mother was not earning much and unable to arrange transport for him, he has been living at the school hostel for many years since his school days.

Yi Sheng’s mother works as a dish-washer in a restaurant to support the family. She also has to support 3 young grand children left behind by her daughter. With his monthly wages of RM 1,200, Yi Sheng is able to help ease the family monthly expenses.

His mother said she never expected that her intellectually disabled son could be such a help to her.

NURASMAH BT MOHD SHAH - 14/7/1996

KHAIRUL AFIZI BIN MUHAMFISAL  - 13/7/1992

Nurasmah is a young woman 25 years of age. She was once a very shy girl and after few years with the school, she gained life-changing confidence and boldly took part in the schools activities. She is also a remarkable dancer.

In 2019, she was selected to represent our country in the Special Olympics World Games held in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Three athletes from Sekolah Semangat Maju Ipoh were trained in Bocce for the competition. Initially her parents did not allow her to participate as they were overly protective of her to go overseas. But after much persuasion and assurance from the Principal, her parents allowed her to go.

CUsersadminDesktopABU DHABI PICSABU DHABI - BOCCE GOLDjpg

Nurasmah made the country proud by succeeding in getting the first Gold Medal for Malaysia in Bocce. She was our Golden Girl. She is also talented in dancing and was part of the school dance troupe performing during invitations at many occasions.

In 2020, we manage to find her a job at a factory and her parents consented to let her work after much persuasion too as they were extremely apprehensive in allowing her to mix with people especially boys. At PERCETAKAN SANWA SDN BHD , she began to be more outspoken, confident, independent and a diligent worker.

Romance bloomed between her and a fellow worker who is also from our Sheltered Workshop. On the 6th of November 2021, she got engaged to Khairul Afizi with the consent of both the family.

A wedding is planned for next year and a beautiful chapter will begin for these 2 special people.

CHEE MEI FEN - 22/1/1976

CUsersadminDownloadsWhatsApp Image 2021-12-03 at 1330592jpeg

Chee Mei Fen has learning disability with slight hearing impairment. She has been with the Sheltered Workshop Taiping since January 2012. She is good in handicraft work while being trained here at the workshop.

At the beginning, Mei Fen was a very shy person and lacked self-confidence. Frequently she was taken by the instructors to various places for sales promotion of the workshop products. This helped her to gain confidence and was able to communicate with people.

In 2012, a booth was set up at Taiping Zoo to sell some of the handicraft products. She

gained experience taking care of the booth with instructors coaching.

From October  2021, she has been our sales promoter at the Taiping Zoo and is able to manage the booth independently and sometimes helped by her mother. She takes pride in her booth.

Social inclusion for neuroatypicality

All of us are different, but some even more. At PAFID, we support the movement to integrate individuals with developmental differences into the local community. For the past 41 years, we have helped and supported thousands of individuals through our system of schools and workshops around the state of Perak.

Perak Association For Intellectually Disabled is the longest established organization of its kind in Peninsular Malaysia. With 5 dedicated schools alone in the state of Perak, our meaningful work impacts the life of close to 500 persons-in-need at present. Graduates from the schools are given vocational training in productive settings that enables them to earn an independent living in 1 of 4 workshops around Perak. With our continuous effort and support, these individuals will be able to earn a living wage that allows them to become productive members of society.

“凡天下疲癃、残疾、惸独、鳏寡,皆吾兄弟之颠连而无告者也。”PAFID可谓东马弱势群体的大哥,为各类拥有发育障碍的大众剖心坼肝,呕心沥血。从创办至今,在霹雳州以成功设立5间特殊教育学校及四间特属工作室,让超过500名自闭、智障、唐氏综合症患者能够立己立身,无需寄于他人。

39 years of history in peril

Due to the unfortunate effects of the pandemic, our association have been hanging on a thread for the past 2 years, thanks to the selfless giving of our donors and the state. However, it is becoming apparent that the current situation is not sustainable and we are forced to reinvent ourselves by extending our donor base and establishing a more sustainable structure in the coming years.

What we do?

At PAFID, we provide education and support for neuroatypical individuals of all ages. From preschoolers till adulthood, our association provides the necessary infrastructure that will support those under our care, allowing them to ultimately live a productive, fulfilling and meaningful life.

Providing for Nadia

Nadia (name changed for privacy) has been with us since her preschool years. At present, her future is uncertain; at best, she will follow in the footsteps of her predecessors, and be attached to a workshop that produces handmade trinkets, earning wages that are barely enough to pay for her travel, food, and lodging. Despite the state providing a small stipend every month. this too is not ideal. Moving forward with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Pafid aims to champion the fight for, and if required, provide for the necessary infrastructure, culminating in an assisted-living community that allows the less fortunate to live a dignified, meaningful, and independent life.

Please donate to support our cause for greater social inclusion. We are only as strong as our weakest link. We can all make a difference. Thank you!
