The torrential rains, overflowing rivers and a series of landslides have devastated the state of Kerala in India. 370 people have lost their lives and more than 800,000 individuals have been displaced. Around 100,000 houses are needed to rebuild.
Habitat for Humanity has helped over 250,000 individuals rebuild their lives in the aftermath of disasters in India. Our Pathway to Permanence model places the affected families on a path to durable, permanent and sustainable disaster resilient shelter solutions. Habitat India is working on an immediate response to this disaster, to support the people of Kerala in this critical time of need.
Habitat for Humanity’s Response to Kerala Floods
Phase 1: Humanitarian Aid Kits for 10,000 families
Phase 2: Emergency Shelter Kits for 5000 families
Phase 3: Home repairs and renovation for 2000 families
Locations: Palakkad, Wayanad, Idduki, Kottayam and Kannur districts.
Contents of Humanitarian Aid Kit: Tarpaulin Sheets | Nylon Rope | Water Filter | Kitchen set (5 plates, 5 bowls,5 spoons,2 pcs cooking pot, 2 serving spoons, 5 glasses and 1 frying pan) | 3 Sleeping Mats | Bucket | 3 Blankets | Hygiene Kit (3 small towels, 3 bath towels, 3 bathing soaps, 3 washing soaps, 0.5 kg washing detergent, 3 big and 2 small toothbrushes, toothpaste, 2 meters marking cloth, 1 hard brush for scrubbing clothes).
The cost of each Humanitarian Aid Kit is INR 10,000 (approximately 143 USD).
