I arrived in the UK as an immigrant at a young age of 17 with a well funded scholarship, place in university and support of wide network of family and friends. I was fortunate that I was not escaping poverty, war, famine, persecution or extraordinary hardship. Many in this world don't have the same fortune or even choice.Refugee Union is Hong Kong's only refugee led association that helps countless immigrants in their daily basic needs while they await their applications to be processed. Next month on 12th Feb 2023 I am running Hong Kong Standard Chartered Half Marathon to raise funds for Refugee Union. For every HK$50 you donate, I promise to add a song of your choice to my playlist (send me your worst :p). All funds will go directly to Refugee Union. Exciting times ! After the success of the walkathon led by our Retain and Advance Women Network in March this year, the D&I Committee and the Sports Committee are running a joined-up D&I walkathon challenge ! The challenge starts Monday 22 November for a three week period and participants will be allocated to competing teams. All teams will challenge each other on total distance that they manage to cover during the challenge and there is also a fundraising element to the Walkathon. Each team will be fundraising for a specific charity, and the teams will battle it out on the amount that they raise for their respective charity. The D&I Walkathon will be a great way to clock up those steps, meet some new colleagues, enjoy the fine Hong Kong winter air on some super hikes, all while raising money for charity – so we hope to get your support! We at Team 1 are fundraising for Refugee Union, a non-profit in Hong Kong that aims to safeguard refugee rights and improve the protection, wellbeing, and future prospect of all refugees. As we see many schools from rural area in the world have a problem in their education, most of students have no enough quality education, some of them can’t read or write, some of them don’t have a change to study due to their family financial (Also their parents mind-set in education is not important, then their children are out of school before graduate to work or even marriage). Star-Edu Music Charity is a social project where we will organize an international charity concert to raise funds for helping the children in rural area who have no chance to attend in school. The concert will first organize in Laos (member’s country), then move to another country (Hong Kong, Indonesia…) in the next time if possible. In the concert, both of local and international singers, brands, and even youths can perform the concert and it’s also a stage that they can show their ability to help the children and also promote themselves. Meanwhile, during the program we will recruit local volunteers to join and gain more experience to improve themselves. Before the concert, we will open a donation booth to accept money, second hand clothes, education equipment and so on where volunteer can do outside activities and spend their free time effectively. After that, before the concert day we and our volunteers will organize and invite musicians from both local and overseas who want to support education to join. Then, when the concert begins everyone can join the concert by buying the tickets and also donate some money or their old clothes at the donation booths to support poor students. After the concert finish, all of money and everything we have received will provide to the students in rural area.

Refugees Union is offering Cantonese Tutorials for Refugees in Hong Kong to help them integrate into society.The Chinese language course, targeting both kids and adults, will mainly focus on teaching refugees the basic expressions, words, and phrases that can be applied in daily conversations, such as self-introduction and greetings. We also take into account the needs of the Cantonese Tutorials at a more advanced level. To accommodate the needs, we might take extra consideration in recruiting experienced tutors that can provide professional teaching and more compressive learning experience to therefugees. The donations will be used to support Cantonese Tutorials in the long term and hire experienced language tutors. Your money will make a huge difference in empowering refugees and helping them to overcome the language barriers.
