Hi everyone!! SUKA Society and SURIANA Welfare Society are collaborating to organize a charity climb to Mt Kinabalu on 11th April 2015. With every km climbed, each climber aims to raise RM250 to a total RM2,250 (km). Funds raised will be channeled to help 3 Orang Asli pre-schools running for a year, help 2 Orang Asli villages to obtain clean water and provide access to food, heath care and basic necessities for 85 urban poor children. You can find out more here: http://www.simplygiving.com/event/sukasurianacharityclimbThis will be my second time climbing Mt Kinabalu and I will not fail this time (unless it rains) because I am so mentally prepared. Amanda Leong

This charity climb is a combination of two things that I am passionate about: sports and adventures, and doing things that add value to the society. Education is important and should ideally be accessible to all.  But there are challenges in reaching all.  According to statistics, between 32.8% and 43.9% of indigenous children dropped out of and failed to enter secondary school from 2001 to 2007.  That is more than 1 in out of 3 indigenous children.  That is like 1 out of your 3 good friends, 1 out of your 3 children, 1 out of your 3 students, or 1 our of your 3 clients, not making it past secondary school.  I was a teacher for 2 years and I experienced for myself the importance of education.  I worked with students who are 6 years behind in literacy and numeracy, counselled students who had no will power to finish school because their own teachers called them "rubbish" (!), pacified students who spoke rudely and with such anger because they were abused at home, verbally and physically.  Without an environment to learn relevant knowledge to build themselves and their communities, we deprive them of choices that they could have had to better sustain themselves, or to exit poverty.SUKA society has developed Empowered 2 Teach, a project that empowers the indigenous communities living in remote areas to start their own pre-school education classes within their villages.  They do this by equipping indigenous teachers recommended by their village leaders and has strong desire to educate children.  Using the project as a platform for their classroom, the teachers teach up to 25 young children on a regular basis. In this charity climb, I want to fundraise RM2,250 (or more).  That will mean that I raise RM250 per km of climb!  Why RM2,250? Raising RM500 will keep an Orang Asli pre-school running for a week, RM1,250 a month and RM2, 250 for 2 months.  And it will take 6 climbers to raise the same amount of moolah to keep the pre-school running for a year.  You can help me to do this by dropping some ringgit for the climb.  It's a 9km up Mount KK and I would like to go up knowing that for every kilometer that I finish, I can help in a little way to run an Orang Asli pre-school for half a week.

Selamat Datang! Terima Kasih! Jisam & Busan Translation - We, Jisam and Busan are the community class teachers in Gerik. We run the community pre-school in Gerik because children in our village do not have the opportunity to learn how to read, write and count before entering Standard 1. Sadly, most Orang Asli children in our community who do not attend pre-school drop out from school. With SUKA Society's help, in 2014, we have started two community pre-school classes in our village. We now have in total about 60 young children attending our classes regularly. Apart from both of us, we have 4 other assistant teachers helping us. We want to climb Mount Kinabalu because we want to assist in fundraising for our schools. We want to increase the budget to fund not only our community pre-schools but also the pre-schools in Slim River, Gopeng and Gua Musang. I hope you can forgive us because that we live in the village and therefore we are unable to manage our SimplyGiving fundraising page. As such, our friends at SUKA Society will be helping us with the fundraising updates. We sincerely hope that you all are able to help us raise RM4500 as the funds will go directly to help the education of our kids. Thank you! Jisam & Busan

Dear all, I will be climbing up to Mt KK on my own cost but to raise funds to support the cause of Orang Asli Education. For every 1km, I hope to raise RM250. The hike up to the summit of Mt Kinabalu is 9km. So hopefully I can raise the target of RM2250. Orang Asli children in Malaysia lack access to pre-school education. For every 100 Orang Asli children who enters Standard 1, only 6 complete their Form 5. A significant reason behind Orang Asli children's dropout from school, begins with their lack of access to pre-school education. Without pre-school education, Orang Asli children struggle to cope with their primary school lessons from day 1. Most kids enter Standard 1 with the ability to read, write and count. Orang Asli children enter Standard 1 hoping to learn how to read, write and count. So if you firmly believe that children deserve pre-school education, please do donate to the cause of this climb. Don't worry, the money does not go to me. All of the funds raised will be channel directly to help fund pre-school education. You can find out more about the cause by visiting www.empowered2teach.org Anyway, I will be climbing up the mountain from the 11th to the 14th of April 2015. I've done it twice, but this time the I am climbing to keep three Orang Asli community pre-schools running for a year. Any amount raised is appreciated. anderson

Dear all, I first started with SUKA Society as a volunteer through their empowered2teach program which is an empowerment project to help Orang Asli communities set up their own pre-school. It has been an enriching and touching journey for me to see the Orang Asli teachers so passionate in helping the children in their community read and write. Many of the Orang Asli children do not complete their primary and secondary education as they cant cope with the syllabus, or simply because their parents cant afford to send their children to school. The teachers also go beyond their means to help the community by setting up extra classes after their pre-school hours to help the illiterate in their village learn to read and write basic English and Bahasa. Through this empowerment project, I can see that the pre-schools has started to motivate and inspire the community on how crucial access to basic education plays a vital role in forming a bright future for their children and in generations to come. I will be climbing Mount Kinabalu on 11-14th April 2015 to raise funds for SUKA Society to help keep 3 Orang Asli community pre-schools running for a year and 2 Orang Asli villages obtain clean water. It only costs RM250 for an orang asli pre-school to run for a week, and i am aiming to raise RM250 for every km climbed, making it a total of RM2250 for 9km's to the peak. To read more about the orang asli pre-school project visit the website here, http://empowered2teach.org/ Please help me reach my target by donating towards my climb as we truly need your support to keep the pre-schools running. Any amount will be appreciated. Thank you, Sarah
