Hello there everyone!! I'm Devraj! An ordinary 20 year old, trying to live an extraordinary adventure!! Currently, I'm a chemical engineering student at the University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus. So here's a little about Project WHEE! It takes place in this small indigenous village in the highlands of Sarawak, Malaysia. A nicely secluded place that's on the brink of becoming a eco-tourist attraction that could drastically improve the quality of life of the Kelabit community there, however the large language barrier becomes a big problem. This is where a group of 14 volunteers from the youth cultural exchange will be there for 3 weeks to teach the local Kelabit ladies English that they can directly apply in their day to day lives of being eco-tour guide. The youth volunteers will be assigned to a kelabit lady and will shadow her on her daily activities teaching them English along the way. Personally, I feel the community needs all the help they can get because without it, its only a matter of time before the Kelabit culture is driven to extinction. As a fellow Malaysian, I feel responsible to do my part to assist in preserving the community! I just wanna keep Malaysia as incredible as its always been! :) If you feel led to donate, please feel free to! Donations of any amount will make a big difference and feel free to share too if you want. Do note that all the funds collected will be used completely for Project WHEE! and Bario. Project WHEE! is collaborating with Simply Giving and Do Something Good to raise funds to send around 14 youths to Bario. If you wish to donate, you can donate through this website you are in now! SPREAD THE LANGUAGE, REVIVE THE CULTURE! JOIN THE MOVEMENT OF WHEE! Hello everyone! I am Esther, a 19 year-old Malaysian who is currently taking a gap year after my A-Levels. Gap year and volunteering are considered as new terms to our Malaysia society. In fact, the movement has already started. Malaysian youngsters nowadays are not solely focusing on their education for personal success but also concerning on our society. We care about what is happening around us; we care about the people; we care about the culture. Taking a break from years long of education in the Ivory Tower isn’t an easy decision. But before I move on further to specify a subject in university; I deeply desire to discover more of the world that I’m living in and to seek ways to involve in the society. Therefore, I discovered WHEE, a chance for youngsters to help those in need and to empower them. BACKGROUND OF WHEE! PROJECT ‘We the youth. Helping those in need. Exceeding expectations. Empowering others.’ is what WHEE project stands for. Bario Kelabit, a village located in the centre of mountainous Kelabit highlands in the northeast of Sarawak. This is an era we can reach everywhere easily, but until today we can only reach to this area either by two daily flights on a small aircraft or by driving for 9 hours from Miri airport. This remote location has caused a declined population and decaying culture. WHEE! Project aims to teach English language to local women in order to boost eco-tourism. Each youth volunteer age from 18 to 25 is to pair with a lady in Bario to teach English through daily activities. Meanwhile, each volunteer will also help them out with their daily routine, for example, planting paddy. All activities that not many city youngsters have ever tried in their life. The final goal is to pass on the culture of Kelabit race, not only to Malaysian but also tourists from around the world. In this cause, each youth volunteer will have to fundraise an amount of RM7,100 to support our expenses in Bario. If you wish to support this project by donation, please do so! Any amount will make a difference; get us one step closer to our goal! Of course, you can also show your support by sharing this out! *All the funds collected will be used by WHEE! Project. *This fundraising event has been proved by simplygiving.com For more information about WHEE project, please click on: https://www.facebook.com/projectwhee *You’re making a difference in other’s life* THANK YOU!!!

Hey there! How would you like to make a difference? :) My name is Arati and I’m embarking on a journey. A journey that not only revolves around my life but the lives of others as well. I hope to someday change the world, one step at a time, slowly but surely. In a few months, I will be embarking on my very first extraordinary journey. As I will be participating in a Youth Cultural Exchange program organized by Project WHEE! In order to participate in the project I will need to raise funds to cover my basic expenses for the entire trip. Are you aware of the existence of the Kelabit tribe? If you aren't, it is completely understandable. The Kelabit tribe is an indigenous tribe in the interior of Sarawak, Malaysia and also our target community. The main aim of the program is to help the Kelabit women in Bario (a small aboriginal village located in the highlands of Sarawak) to earn some income through eco-tourism. Currently, there are 25 homestays in Bario which are already hosting mainly Western eco-tourists. In order for them to further succeed in grasping the attention of even more tourist, the Kelabit women in Bario will need to possess the ability to communicate with the tourist with ease. Seeing as, English is an international language, we the volunteers from the youth cultural exchange program will be assigned to approximately 1 or 2 Bario women to teach English. We will be using the technique of shadowing to accomplish this. Meaning, we will be simultaneously helping the Bario women with their everyday chores and teaching them English along the way. I really do hope that you donate as this is an incredible project as it could most definitely change the lives and the future of the Bario community.  Every little bit counts, and it starts with YOU! :) Should you have any questions feel free to send me an email at [email protected] Also, do check out the official Project WHEE! website at http://theprojectwhee.blogspot.com/p/project-whee-we-youth.html for more information on the project Please be aware that ALL funds raised will be used solely for the purpose of Project WHEE! Thank you! :)) “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others” - Mahatma Gandhi

Hi there! Thank you for visiting my fundraising page! My name is Shu Anne and I’m currently raising funds in order to participate in a Youth Cultural Exchange to Bario, Sarawak. Bario, mostly famous for its rice, is also home to the Kelabit people. At approximately 5000 people, the Kelabits are one of the smallest ethnic groups in Sarawak. Due to various economic and social factors, the Kelabit youths are slowly moving away to urban areas to seek jobs or a better education and just over a thousand of them remain on the highlands. The main goal of this youth exchange is to help the women of Bario earn an income through eco-tourism. Right now, there are 25 homestays in Bario which are already hosting mainly Western eco-tourists. Being able to converse in English would make their job as a tour guide all the more fulfilling, in addition to appealing to a wider audience. Throughout the exchange, volunteers like me will be assigned to 1-2 women each. We’ll be teaching and encouraging the use of English while helping with their daily activities. By doing so, we hope to improve their economical sustainability through eco-tourism as well as rekindle the traditions and practices of the Kelabits in Bario. With this project, we hope to raise awareness amongst youths about the needs of the community and environment in the rural areas of East Malaysia. In the long run, this project hopes to see the Kelabit youths return to Bario to join the efforts in reviving the community. So what are you waiting for? Click on the DONATE button now! Every donation counts in making this project a reality. Don’t hesitate to share this page with your friends too! My name is Parthiban Perisamy. I live in San Peng Flt which is near Pudu area. I am 22 years-old this year and I completed a Diploma in Mass Communication at Stamford College, Petaling Jaya. Ever since I grow up, I have a vision in my heart and mind, which is to be a role model for other youths and I need to open a shelter home for the youths in my area. The reason why I have this vision is because the community where I was brought up is an area which is declined by the police because it is a black area, an area which is famous for its crimes. The people involved in these crimes are under 7 to 40 years-old. It might be a shock to everyone, you might think “How can a 7 year-old boy be involved in crime activities?” Let me explain to you how it happens. One example of the major crime which happens in my area is “drug business”. They are many legal businesses in our country, but now illegal business like drugs is increasing. In our country, many youths are making illegal money from doing illegal businesses, the sad part in this is that they use the youths for this type of negative work. The Boss himself will use some cash to buy an amount of drugs from the big pushers, which consist of people aged between 28 and 40 years-old. They will recruit a group of young boys aged between 18 and 27 years-old to work under them by giving some cash and sell the drugs to school kids or boys around the age of 7 to 17. In my area, crimes like gang fights, skipping school, misbehaviors and discipline problems arises. This is a major problem happening in the community. This is our country and all the youths are leaders of tomorrow, I want to change the youth in my community to let them understand that they are the country’s leader for the next generation, if this problem is not solved, our kids will not be safe for sure and Malaysia will not exceed expectations. Why I am going to Bario I have a dream to open a shelter home for kids, the reason why is because I grow up in a neighborhood where crimes takes place often. This has influenced many of my friends and I don’t want to be in that group, this makes me want to help the other youths by teaching them good attitudes and behaviors. Because of this I need a platform, by opening a shelter home for kids, I can teach them good characters since the early age, because many young kids were dropouts from school in my area because of the bad discipline problems among the youth. In this case, I need to learn how to manage them and enquire many other skills. So by going to Bario, I am going to learn lot of skills and also motivate myself to handle any difficult situations in future. I love everyone, I treat everyone as my family and relatives, and I cannot take it if my beloved relative is in a bad situation. This attitude makes me want to go Bario, Sarawak because I accept the people over there as my relatives and they need help, so I feel that I need to do my part for them. Bario is a Malaysian village located in the center of the Kelabit Highlands in the northeast of Sarawak and 3280 feet above sea level, it is the homeland of the Kelabits. Most of the population there is older than 40 as the younger generation has moved to the city for job opportunities so it is predicted that in 10 years’ time, Bario will be depopulated. That’s why I am here in project WHEE!, to serve the Bario women by teaching them English so that they can be hospitable to tourists . From this, they get to earn an income through eco-tourism related work to lift their poverty. This project will also raise awareness among young Malaysians to learn more about the country’s rural community, bring to the media’s attention and educate them to become responsible youths. Moreover, this project helps to empower the youths by giving them a wider perspective about life, expose them to the diversity and multiculturalism of East Malaysia and also instill critical thinking and problem solving for the future leaders who are concerned over the needs of the community and environment in rural areas. Last but not least, don’t forget the quote: “What you do, it will come back to you.” If you have the kind heart to donate any amount, the women at Bario will be blessed from your financial aid. Personally, I will be happy and thanks to you all, I get the chance to make a difference. Please donate through this website: www.simplygiving.com/cultex20 All donations will be allocated for ProjectWHEE! and Bario. I've fundraised through car wash, Massage, and odd jobs to date. Hello there! I am participating in a youth cultural exchange cum rural development project called Project WHEE! based in Bario, Sarawak, Malaysia. The aim of this project is to boost ecotourism in Bario and to revive the community. Bario is made up of 13 villages primarily resided by the Kelabits. Development in Bario is impeded due to the mountains that isolate it from the rest of the world. As a result, many Kelabits have chosen to migrate to cities for better education and job opportunities, leaving behind the very young and elderly Kelabits in Bario. As agriculture is the main economic activity in Bario, many elderly women are forced to continue farming due to the shortage of manpower. It is predicted that in 10 years, Bario will be severely depopulated. As a participant, I will be assigned to a local woman and her family. While shadowing her for the entire duration of the project, I will improve her command of spoken English through conversations. Having a better command of English will enable her to communicate more effectively with international tourists, hence becoming a better tour guide or homestay host. Besides this, I will also carry out community services such as farming or cleaning work. I will be going to Bario for 22 days under Batch 5 in January 2015. My targeted amount is MYR 5800, which includes my airfare, homestay cost, transportation, etc. Every cent donated will be used to empower the Bario women, prepare Bario to receive more tourists, set up basic infrastructures, and in a bigger picture, revive the Bario community. Please donate to my cause! Every dollar counts and every penny makes a difference. For more information regarding Project WHEE!, visit www.facebook.com/projectwhee or www.theprojectwhee.blogspot.com. Hello everyone! My name is Sarah Tan, a 19 year-old Malaysian and I am currently interning at eHomemakers (an NPO in which Project WHEE! is under). A little background story, the main aim of Project WHEE! is to help the women in Bario, Sarawak, earn income through eco-tourism. Volunteers from the youth cultural exchange will be assigned to 1-2 of the women to teach English informally for 3 weeks. In other words, they'll be teaching English as they shadow and help along their daily activities. Why English? Because Bario is slowly attracting foreign tourists and their main language of communication is English. By doing this, we hope that it will help boost Bario's eco-tourism and lift poverty. (Bario is located in the northeast of Sarawak, 3280 feel above sea level) I find a need to invest my time and energy in this because we are in the process of reviving and improving a traditional culture here (The Kelabits) that makes Malaysia such a multiracial and diverse country. If you feel led to donate, please feel free to! Donations of any amount will make a big difference and feel free to share too if you want. Hello everyone! My name is Rhonwyn and I'm the chief coordinator (and founder) of Project WHEE!, which is the acronym for 'We the youth. Helping those in need. Exceeding expectations. Empowering others'. Project WHEE! is a youth cultural exchange program. We select youth from all over Malaysia to participate. Our aim is to teach the Kelabit women of Bario,Sarawak (Borneo) how to speak English so that they communicate with tourists who visit Bario. With the knowledge of basic spoken English, they can earn an income by acting as eco-tourism tourguides and also set up homestays (there are no hotels in Bario). I fell in love with the community of Bario when I went 4 years ago. Back then, I was a lot younger. But since my first visit, my love for Bario has continued to grow and grow. At the end of Batch 2 in July this year, I was presented with a kaboq (traditional necklace) by my Kelabit 'grandmother', and was embraced into a hug. She told me in a mix of Malay and Kelabit, 'Sekan, Bario kampung iko. Jangan ko lupa kita di sini bila balik KL. (Sekan [my local Kelabit name], Bario is your hometown. Don't ever forget us here when you go back to Kuala Lumpur). Project WHEE! is by far the best memory of my 3 year gap. I have learnt so much from the people of Bario, the youth that embark on this project as well as leading this project itself. And you know what? I'm not done learning! In fact, I will be extending to gap year 4 to continue and expand Project WHEE! to greater heights. This is where you can help! For every donation, you are not contributing to 'Rhonwyn', but to: 1. The growth of Project WHEE!, which is still in its infancy stage. 2. Empowering the women of Bario to earn a sustainable income through eco-tourism. 3. My mission and my passion for community development. Is Project WHEE! a successful project? Heck yeah it is! Check out our Facebook page at www.facebook.com/projectwhee to see what the past batches of youth have been up to. And also, do watch the impact video linked here!
