EDUCATE. ELEVATE. EMPOWER.There are millions of children across the globe who lack access to secondary education. In Malaysia, only 16% of the refugee children aged 14-17 enrol in secondary education. Most of the refugee children will not continue to high school due to financial and social barriers.Ideas Academy is providing a solutionIdeas Academy is a secondary learning centre for underprivileged children, including refugee, stateless and undocumented children. Our primary aim is that every child between 12 and 18 years old should gain a strong foundation in secondary education so that they grow up becoming responsible, confident and compassionate citizens of tomorrow.Ideas Academy provides holistic learning using the Cambridge curriculum as well as life skill programme and extra-curricular activities to develop our students soft skills. We started with a class of 24 students and we have over 160 students at the moment and a growing waiting list. With your support we hope that the Academy will be able to grow to approximately 300 students by 2020.Building a sustainable learning centreIdeas Academy is one of the few secondary level learning centres for refugees and has been able to keep its doors open by generous donations of foundations, corporations and individuals. The learning centre wishes to change its model from charity to social enterprise by opening up for Malaysians and foreigners who are looking for access to high quality IGCSE education at competitive pricing. By opening our doors for Malaysian and foreign students in September 2019 we are building a more self-sustainable learning centre and we create a more inclusive form of education. In other words each paying student will enrol one underprivileged student. Together we will be able to break the cycle of poverty and create better life opportunities for underprivileged. How will your donation help us?At the moment our learning centre is limited to accommodate a maximum of 175 students. A renovation is needed to accommodate approximately 300 students in the near future and to keep providing excellent education we wish to extend our educational program and expand our team of qualified teachers.A donation of:100 RM can provide extra educational material for 1 student500 RM gives us the chance to upgrade the students facilities1000 RM will help us to grow our team of qualified teachers5000 RM will help us to create new classroomsNo matter how big or small any donation is significant and appreciated. Hi. I'm Metilda and I teach English, Accounting and Commerce at Ideas Academy. Our Academy provides secondary education that follows the Cambridge syllabus and prepares students for the Cambridge examinations when they reach Year 11. We are quite new, about 3 years old only but we have big dreams for our students who are refugees registered with UNHCR. You cannot imagine our sense of elation when our first batch passed out of the challenging Cambridge examinations with flying colours. What had started out as a daring dream came true and we had beaten the odds. Our next batch will be appearing for the examinations in October/November this year, all things permitting. More than anything, the Academy holds out a hope for refugees, that they too have a place in this world and a recognised school qualification paves the way for that. To many refugees, the future is bleak and so when we open our doors to them, we are actually helping them to secure their future. It is imperative that we can give them this chance especially since they are barred from joining the mainstream schools. Besides education, we also provide a simple meal for our refugee students. To many, this would be their only meal for the day. So this might help you get a sense of the work we do here at  Ideas Academy. There are so many other activities that are also provided to give our young people a memorable and positive experience of school. So join me please in giving them a chance to make a life for themselves. We must do something to help them; we must hold ourselves accountable for their future because if not us..... Who? The Academy is now at a crucial time when we are facing serious financial challenges. If we were to shut our doors to our refugee students because of a lack of funds, we are in effect dashing their hopes and they will be devastated ...... and that is the truth. They depend on us and we cannot let them down. We must not! Please help us to continue with our work with the refugee community until we can put in place a self-sustainable model that we are currently working on.

For the past two years, I've been working with Ideas Academy in KL, first as a volunteer and then as interim general manager. I am now making a personal appeal to you to donate to our school to ensure we can continue providing low cost, high quality education. Some fast facts for you; There are approximately 40,000 refugee children in Malaysia who are registered with the UNHCR. In reality, this number is probably double.Refugee children are not allowed to attend Malaysian public schools and international school expenses are out of reach of refugees. This leaves extremely limited options for accessing educationThere are approximately 140 learning centres catering to primary/elementary school aged refugee children but only 3 learning centres catering to secondary/high school aged refugee childrenLearning centres such as Ideas Academy rely solely on donations for fundingBecause we have had some major corporate donors stopping their support, we are now in desperate need of funds to keep going. Our business plan is to transition to a 1:1 fee-paying model in September where one fee-paying student will allow one refugee student to attend school for free.  To do this, we need funds to cover our operating costs and renovations to enhance classrooms. The good news? If you're donating in US/AUS dollars, Swiss francs or Euros, your money will multiply! USD25 = MYR100 --> Schools fees for one month for a refugee student

Ideas Academy

Our adventure in Kuala Lumpur started almost 2 years ago. I started working as a volunteer at the UNHCR and through my work I got involved with refugees and Ideas Academy. I recently joined the Ideas Academy team as a project manager and started this crowdfunding campaign. Ideas Academy is a secondary learning centre for refugees in Malaysia and plays a really important role in the lives of young refugee students, by providing high quality education and creating a save environment for them to learn and explore their talents. During my time here I learned a lot about refugees in Malaysia, their situation and the difficulties they are facing every day. Apart from most other countries, refugees in Malaysia don't have a legal status and because of this they don’t have the basic right on education, healthcare and work. Ideas Academy is one of the few schools in Kuala Lumpur that provides secondary education for refugees and at the moment we are fully depending on donations. Ideas Academy has over 160 students at the moment and a growing waiting list. With your support we hope that the Academy will be able to grow to approximately 300 students by 2020. To keep our doors open and to help more students we need your help! Any donation, big or small, makes a difference.A donation of:100 RM / 20 euro can provide extra educational material for 1 student500 RM / 100 euro gives us the chance to upgrade the students facilities1000 RM / 200 euro will help us to grow our team of qualified teachers5000 RM / 1000 euro will help us to create new classroomsThank you for your support!
