A few weeks ago, Mojtaba Shakibafar, an Iranian refugee who lives temporarily in Malaysia (while his UNHCR - UN Refugee Agency- case was under review) was admitted to hospital for severe dengue fever.
After being in ICU for a few days, unfortunately he passed away on the 13th of June 2017 due to severe internal bleeding and organ failure.
As he was the only person responsible for financial support of his family, he left them in a critical condition without any source of income or the permission to work (because they are foreigners and without working visas) and also with a considerable hospital bill of more than RM18,000 which should be paid before releasing the deceased body from the hospital. His wife and his 11-year old son are not only shocked because of their sudden loss, but also afraid of the future because they should survive at least one more year in Malaysia waiting for the result of their refugee case.
Without any family member to financially help them and absolutely no support from Malaysian government, there is no chance that they could survive here.
The family has already been borrowing money from their immediate circle of friends for the hospital bills, and are indebted to their friends who have already over-extended themselves.
This fundraising is to appeal to any kind souls who would be able to help by supporting them for one year as they await for their appeal case with the UNHCR
It is estimated that they will need RM2,000 a month = RM24,000 a year for their living expenses.
The breakdown of this RM2,000 a month is as follows:
- Rental RM900
- Utilities RM100
- School Fees RM150
- Food RM600
- Transportation RM150
- Medicine (the son has asthma and the mother has migraine) RM100
We look forward to receive help from those generous and kind people who care about others and thank them for their support.

Background Story (by SimplyGiving): Iran is a dangerous place to be different. People can be persecuted for political views, their race, gender sexuality and religion. Ethnic minorities in particular are discriminated so they don't have the same legal rights as the rest of the population, but also on a day-to-day basis in terms of access to employment or education. Mojtaba Shakibafar had left Iran with his family in the hopes of giving them a brighter future.
