The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund

I feel strongly to make a meaningful contribution to the underprivileged ones as they deserve a fair share to enjoy their stay during their times on this earth. They need the right support for the daily needs so that they are not deprived of it for normal growth throughout their times at school.

A team of happy people. We've always been so privileged and we've never had to go a day without pocket money... But what about those who have?We want to help, and The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund (SPMF) aids children and youth of low-income families get through school. Since the project started in 2000, the Fund has disbursed close to $50m and helped over 130,000 cases of children and youth in providing them with monthly school pocket money. Easing the burden, children can use this money for school-related expenses, such as buying a meal during recess, paying for their transport or using it to meet other schooling needs. In celebration of Singapore’s 50 years of independence and entering into his 6th year of survival after his bone marrow transplant (on 30 September 2015), 58-year old stage 4 leukemia survivor, Dr William Tan who is also an accomplished Paralympian and Resident Physician at National Cancer Centre Singapore, will hand-cycle and ferry a child in an attached chariot for 50 hours continuously from 3 pm on 28th August 2015 to 5 pm on 30th August 2015 at Temasek Junior College, an event named as “50/50@TJC” to raise $50,000 to help needy children. Students from 50 schools including his alma mater, Raffles Institution will run alongside Dr Tan and learn about Giving Back and Public Service in Action (besides the inspirational talks he have given them).Paralysed from the waist down since the age of 2 due to childhood poliomyelitis, Dr Tan has since 1987, devoted himself to championing as well as fundraising for needy causes around the world until April 2009 when he was diagnosed with Stage 4 leukemia. Despite being told that he had only 9-12 months to live, Dr Tan braved through 6 months of chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant. “Even with transplants, half the patients die subsequently from complications or a relapse of the cancer” (quoted from Dr Tan Lip Kun, NUHS senior blood specialist in Straits Times, 5 Jan 2010). Grateful that he will soon pass 6 years of survivorship after bone marrow transplant, he is determined to “do more for the community” with his new lease of life. The 50 hour challenge will be Dr Tan’s toughest challenge since his bone marrow transplant. The longest similar challenge he has ever undertaken was a 10 hours “Cycle of Hope” challenge more than 5 ½ years ago on 9 January 2010.   The beneficiary of his 50-hour toll is again “The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund”, which supports children from low-income families. All donations made via SimplyGiving will go directly to STSPMF.

Hello! We are Team Ignite, a group of 4 students passionate to advocate change in the community. This year, we are participating in Citi-YMCA Youth for Causes (YFC), is a program which allows students to support a volunteer welfare organisation of their choice. We chose to support Singapore School Pocket Money Fund (SPMF), an organisation which aims to provide pocket money for children of low income families for them to spend on their lunches and other school-related expenses. Each year, SPMF supports more than 14,000 children and youth and has helped more than 130,000 children and youth by providing them with pocket money. And this is exactly why we need you to join us in supporting SPMF. We believe that together, we can reach out to every child in need, and provide them with the resources to do well in school -  and beyond. This online giving portal is set up mainly for our social media challenge, the <3 challenge (read as less than three challenge). The challenge encourages everyone to spend less than $3 per lunch (including drinks) for at least 3 consecutive days. Other than for the purpose of the challenge, this donation portal is open for everyone who would like to donate to SPMF through us, Team Ignite. All donations will be channeled directly to SPMF by simplygiving.
