FROM DYING MAN TO CHAMPIONING CHILDREN’S NEEDS

My Story

In celebration of Singapore’s 50 years of independence and entering into his 6th year of survival after his bone marrow transplant (on 30 September 2015), 58-year old stage 4 leukemia survivor, Dr William Tan who is also an accomplished Paralympian and Resident Physician at National Cancer Centre Singapore, will hand-cycle and ferry a child in an attached chariot for 50 hours continuously from 3 pm on 28th August 2015 to 5 pm on 30th August 2015 at Temasek Junior College, an event named as “50/50@TJC” to raise $50,000 to help needy children. Students from 50 schools including his alma mater, Raffles Institution will run alongside Dr Tan and learn about Giving Back and Public Service in Action (besides the inspirational talks he have given them).

Paralysed from the waist down since the age of 2 due to childhood poliomyelitis, Dr Tan has since 1987, devoted himself to championing as well as fundraising for needy causes around the world until April 2009 when he was diagnosed with Stage 4 leukemia. Despite being told that he had only 9-12 months to live, Dr Tan braved through 6 months of chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant. “Even with transplants, half the patients die subsequently from complications or a relapse of the cancer” (quoted from Dr Tan Lip Kun, NUHS senior blood specialist in Straits Times, 5 Jan 2010). Grateful that he will soon pass 6 years of survivorship after bone marrow transplant, he is determined to “do more for the community” with his new lease of life.

The 50 hour challenge will be Dr Tan’s toughest challenge since his bone marrow transplant. The longest similar challenge he has ever undertaken was a 10 hours “Cycle of Hope” challenge more than 5 ½ years ago on 9 January 2010.   The beneficiary of his 50-hour toll is again “The Straits Times School Pocket Money Fund”, which supports children from low-income families.

All donations made via SimplyGiving will go directly to STSPMF.
