Personal Challenge

Let's make a difference by not taking clean water for granted!

My Story

Hi guys! While many of us are guilty of leaving the tap on while brushing our teeth, or taking 30-minute long showers, did you know that approximately 4.5 million families in rural Cambodia do not have access to clean water? The lack of such basic necessity affects the lives of many, including children, and is one of the main causes of poor health which even leads to death. So here I am, trying to do what little I can to help raise money to build water filters for families in rural Cambodia. This is actually a group fundraising effort organised by Water and Toilets (WNT), a non-profit which has been raising awareness and money to tackle water crisis in many parts of the world. To date, WNT has managed to help over 6,000 people in countries such as Sri Lanka and Kenya. Back to Project H2O. The plan is to raise a minimum of USD500, which will be sufficient to build and install 8 water filters. This translates into a lifetime supply of clean water for 8 families! The proceeds will be donated to an NGO in Cambodia called Water For Cambodia (WFC) for them to build and install these water filters for those in need. In conjunction with this fundraiser, I will be making a trip to Cambodia in January, with WNT, where I will get my hands dirty building the filters and also meet with the families which we will be helping. Many of you may wonder if the money raised will be used to fund my trip to Cambodia. Rest assured that the trip is entirely self-funded. WNT has been very transparent about how donations will be used. To provide some details, each water filter costs USD62.50. 80% of that (USD50) goes directly towards materials needed to build and transport the water filters, 10% (USD5.25) goes towards credit card fees and online transaction cost and the remaining 10% goes to WNT to help them cover some basic costs incurred in fundraising. If you have any questions about how this all works, how the funds are being managed and about the organisations that are involved in this fundraiser click on the link below and you should be able to find an answer to your questions. http://www.waterandtoilets.com/answers If you would like to contact WNT directly, you can always contact its founder Navin Muruga at [email protected]. He'll be more than happy to answer your questions. Also, if you're curious about WNT, you can visit their website at www.waterandtoilets.com and you can read more about WFC by visiting their website at www.waterforcambodia.org. Thanks for taking the time to read this and it will mean the world to me if you support this cause which I truly believe in by making a donation, however small, as every penny counts. Thanks again guys! Joyce
