Help James Conquer Mt Fuji in Support of the Special Needs Community!

My Story

At the tender age of 21, James was diagnosed with stage 2 bone cancer and underwent many rounds of chemotherapy, eventually narrowly avoiding the amputation of his leg through a surgery that weakened his knee. He pulled through those difficult times with the support from his family and friends. He wishes to be a similar pillar of support for others and now leads various YMCA Community Service Programmes. James is among the 10 YMCA Special Needs clients embarking on YMCA’s first-ever expedition to Mount Fuji under the Y Camp Challenge Inclusive Climb.

By conquering the peak, he wishes to raise awareness for people with special needs and reduce discrimination and prejudice in the society. “It has always been a dream of mine to climb a mountain. I hope that this climb will show people that people with special needs can achieve, too, so the public and decision-makers will champion a more inclusive society.”

About the Challenge

As part of our mission to overcome limitations and change perceptions, YMCA is sending a team of special needs individuals to conquer Mount Fuji for the first time. Over the next 3 months, we will challenge them to make the impossible, possible as they prepare for the journey up Mount Fuji.

This inaugural expedition to Mount Fuji is part of our Y Camp Challenge initiative – an outdoor adventure programme – that empowers our special needs clients through outdoor activities.

The four-day expedition is a test of physical endurance and emotional resilience as our special needs clients go through a series of pre-trip trainings and the actual hike up the mountain. Through this programme, clients are able to develop their confidence, overall sociability and are empowered to look beyond their limitations. These skills will eventually help our clients adapt to the society more confidently and comfortably.

The climb also aims to raise funds for Y Camp Challenge, a YMCA programme that strengthens special needs by building their confidence and capabilities.
