Help Jia Xiang and Jia Wei Conquer Mt Fuji in support of the special needs community!

The youngest participants of this year’s Inclusive Climb are 18-year-old Jia Xiang and Jia Wei, twin brothers with autism. A trip to Pulau Ubin with their father Mr Phang showed him how they could rise to the challenges of outdoor and adventurous activities such as canoeing and adapting to new environments. The energetic brothers seem to have a natural affinity for sports and are willing to take on new endeavours. Mr Phang hopes to push their boundaries through the YMCA Inclusive Climb 2019, seeing it as an opportunity for them to meet more people, have meaningful interactions and strengthen their confidence and independence.

About the Challenge

As part of our mission to overcome limitations and change perceptions, YMCA is sending a team of special needs individuals to conquer Mount Fuji for the first time. Over the next 3 months, we will challenge them to make the impossible, possible as they prepare for the journey up Mount Fuji.   This inaugural expedition to Mount Fuji is part of our Y Camp Challenge initiative – an outdoor adventure programme – that empowers our special needs clients through outdoor activities.

The four-day expedition is a test of physical endurance and emotional resilience as our special needs clients go through a series of pre-trip trainings and the actual hike up the mountain. Through this programme, clients are able to develop their confidence, overall sociability and are empowered to look beyond their limitations. These skills will eventually help our clients adapt to the society more confidently and comfortably.

The climb also aims to raise funds for Y Camp Challenge, a YMCA programme that strengthens special needs by building their confidence and capabilities.
