My Story

Help Jessen & Emily conquer Mount Fuji in support of the special needs community!

After meeting at activities organised by the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped, Jessen and Emily got married in 1992. Though visually impaired, the couple enjoys activities such as soundball, leisure cycling and nature walks. They have even completed a hike at Gunung Datuk which required them to go on all fours and endure prickling thorns. They look forward to new challenges at YMCA Inclusive Climb 2019, with Emily hoping to gain more confidence in her walking, while Jessen hopes to overcome his fear of heights.

“People with disabilities may have limitations, but they can be overcome through adaptation and more equal opportunities. People must believe that we can do it and have confidence in us.”

About the Challenge

As part of our mission to overcome limitations and change perceptions, YMCA is sending a team of special needs individuals to conquer Mount Fuji for the first time. Over the next 3 months, we will challenge them to make the impossible, possible as they prepare for the journey up Mount Fuji.

This inaugural expedition to Mount Fuji is part of our Y Camp Challenge initiative – an outdoor adventure programme – that empowers our special needs clients through outdoor activities.

The four-day expedition is a test of physical endurance and emotional resilience as our special needs clients go through a series of pre-trip trainings and the actual hike up the mountain. Through this programme, clients are able to develop their confidence, overall sociability and are empowered to look beyond their limitations. These skills will eventually help our clients adapt to the society more confidently and comfortably.

The climb also aims to raise funds for Y Camp Challenge, a YMCA programme that strengthens special needs by building their confidence and capabilities.
