Personal Challenge

"Children are the living messages we send to a time we will not see." — John F. Kennedy, 35th President of the United States By contributing any amount at all, you are sending these kids a message of love, hope and generosity that they too will bring to the future generations. For that, I thank you.

My Story

SMK Kuala Kurau is rural school located in the north region of Perak. The parents of most school-going children here are fishermen, factory workers or they work in plantations and paddy fields. This places almost 80% of the children in household incomes of less than RM 1000.

School is the place where students called it their second home. Despite the low academic achievement among students, sports is the bond that holds everyone together in this school. The majority of students here struggle to excel in academic achievement as it is among the under-performing schools in the nation. Most of the students here came from challenging background, and pursuing academic excellence wasn't their best interest. However, sports gives the students a sense of purpose and achievement, especially amidst low morale when it comes to academic excellence. So much so that over the years, SMK Kuala Kurau has developed outstanding handball players, two of whom have been selected for the national handball team. A huge contributing factor is the sometimes forgotten teachers and coaches who motivate the children and sacrifice their time and effort to nurture their potential. They do this consistently despite a lack of resources. This is because the school is lacking a training ground as well as facilities to train the players. They have to travel a long distance to another school for training, as the condition of SMK Kuala Kurau does not permit a conducive environment for training to take place. The only available location in the school is the field that becomes wet and muddy when it rains. Since the school is located in a coastal area, the weather is unpredictable throughout the year, causing disruptions to training sessions.

The Initiave:
The aim of this campaign is to build a handball court for the school, thus providing a resource that does not merely help the students temporarily, but can raise school morale and nurture talent in a sustainable way and leave a legacy behind for Kuala Kurau. Handball being one of the school’s strongest points despite a lack of funding shows that given a push in the right direction, excellence in this area would be able to flourish.
