My Story

We are a group of Advanced Business Writing students from the University of Malaya working together raising funds to sponsor the education of an underprivileged child with the intellectual disability-Down Syndrome.

‘This is a universal crisis and, for some children, the impact will be lifelong.’

Children are not the face of this pandemic. But they risk being among its biggest victims, as children’s lives are nonetheless being changed in profound ways. All children, of all ages, and in all countries, are being affected, in particular by the socio-economic impacts and, in some cases, by mitigation measures that may inadvertently do more harm than good.

Moreover, the harmful effects of this pandemic will not be distributed equally. They are expected to be most damaging for children in the poorest countries, and in the poorest neighbourhoods, and for those in already disadvantaged or vulnerable situations.

Now is the time for global solidarity and support, especially with the most vulnerable in our societies, particularly in the emerging and developing world. Only together can we overcome the intertwined health, social and economic impacts of the pandemic and prevent its escalation into a protracted humanitarian catastrophe, with the potential loss of already achieved development gains.

We recognize this opportunity to build back better. We are committed to pooling our expertise, experience and connections to support the children which are already in disadvantaged or vulnerable situations. Thus, the objective of the project ‘Down to the Rescue’ is to contribute to the vulnerable segment of the society in this pandemic, to educate the public on the intellectual disability-Down Syndrome and to raise funds for a child’s special study needs.

We must rethink the future of these children and to tackle problems they face with ambition and urgency. We hope that through this project, we can play our part in protecting the health, livelihoods, food security and rights to education of these children, and ensure that their ‘new normal’ is a better one.
