severely blind and
295 million people who are moderate-to-severe visual
impairment on this world. A lot of people in this world don’t have ability to
experience the wonders of this world. That’s where the angels of St Nicholas Home come in.
St Nicholas’ Home is a
non-profit and non-governmental charitable organization that aims to respond to
the evolving needs of the blind and visually impaired (BVI) community in
Malaysia, irrespective of their religion, race and background.(snh.org.my,
2023) It is located at 4, Jalan Bagan Jermal, 10250 Georgetown, Pulau Pinang.
With more than 10000 volunteers in their team, they have been providing
multiple services and training for the BVI since 1926, such as education,
rehabilitation, low vision care, social work and more. St Nicholas’s Home has
been consistently impacting the society for the better. Some notable events
include :
Partnered with Penang
Adventist Hospital to offer free cataract surgeries to the needy patients.
Hosted events such as
“World Sight Day” to raise awareness on eye care and prevent avertable
blindness.
Celebrates
“White Cane
Day” every October since the year 1986 to raise awareness about equal rights
for the blind and visually impaired.
Raised RM40,000 through
the
“L’Occitane Race for Vision” to raise awareness regarding avertable
blindness, and to fund free cataract surgeries project. More than 7,000 runners
participated in the run. St Nicholas’ Home is a
worthy and respectable organization that has a noble goal of helping the blind
and visually impaired, and even helping society to prevent preventable
blindness before it’s too late. St Nicholas’ Home deserves our full support and
utmost respect for caring about the BVI and society. However, due to St
Nicholas’ Home being a non-profit and non-governmental charitable organization,
they receive no profit and can only operate using their own funding or through
donations. Therefore, this fundraising event aims to help St Nicholas’ Home in
terms of funding.
