Today, I am my dad's voice. 

Ever since he discovered that he had colon cancer Stage 2 in December 2012, everything changed - not entirely for the worst, but mostly a constant wheel of emotional roller coaster, endless research of any possible treatment conventional and holistic, alternative, traditional - you name it. 

The first treatment that he had was to remove the tumor which also required him to have a colostomy. My dad was already living a healthy lifestyle: he did not smoke, did not drink, exercised and remained active. Yet, now we know one thing - that Cancer does not have a preference. It attacks you when it wants to and it cripples you mentally and physically. His diet changed dramatically after that, only eating non processed food, avoiding sweets and sugars, and avoiding 'trigger food'. For four years, he managed to keep it under controlled, having regular check ups with tumor markers being way below the line. 

 In 2016, he started to have pain in his bottom back. Being on guard, we followed up each pain with check ups and scans which revealed NOTHING. But it wasn't nothing, IT was back - this time clinging onto his sacral bone. The doctors suggested chemotherapy, radiotherapy and surgery to remove his whole sacral bone in order to completely 'eliminate' the cancer. But we all know that that is not a guarantee. Cancer will always be cancer, at least that's what we've learnt from the 4 years that we have been 'guarding' it. My dad, being 68 at that time, along with the whole family, didn't agree with the surgery but went on with chemotherapy and radiotherapy. It was not smooth-sailing, it was actually heartbreaking to see the man whom i knew was the pillar of the family crumble upon this conventional drug. Due to the treatment, he lost his bladder function and was forced to use  a catheter. 3 months of chemotherapy and 10 rounds of radiotherapy- back into the abyss where you constantly wonder if the treatment worked or not. It was dark, yet we were hopeful. While life had to go on, dad ventured into natural treatment through diet, exercise and supplements. One thing that my dad was determined to be returned to him was the use of his bladder. He was skeptical that he would be on it permanently as some of the doctors suggested and started 'training' his body to gain control of this loss. AND he did! Even though it took him months with bouts of pain - he finally got rid of it. And he slowly was getting his old positive self back. But then again- the pain never left him. The pain greets him daily, and on good days would pardon him allowing him off his painkillers for a day, but the next day it would return. On his regular checkup in January, we were yet to be dumbfounded with another finding. There was a nodule in his left base lung. What was this?? The doctors were not able to tell as. All they said was 'it's too small to know'. Its been 5 years since we've been on this crusade - the last thing that we would do is leave it without knowing what it is! In the March 2018 follow up CT scan, we observed that it has grown and some other little ones have emerged. Silently, we gulped down the reality that sits in front of us. We all know what it is - we need not to say it out loud. The doctors suggested 12 cycles of chemo. My dad is turning 7o this year. 

Despite my dad constantly being drawn into taking chemo as a form of 'the only way out' - we cannot succumb, we all know it will destroy him. The next choice of treatment will be immunotheraphy which uses the body's own immune system to fight cancer cells. And for us, it is our safest bet. But the cost is overwhelming, it easily reaches up yo RM200k and we have just not the capacity to. On another note, dad's sacral bone has shown 'regrowth' which is one HUGE news on top of the other bad ones. And this is one reason that we believe, we really BELIEVE that we MUST carry on this fight. My dad has been a strong, highly disciplined and my main motivator in my whole entire life. Help him be a survivor...help him win this crusade.
