Message from UNHCR:

UNHCR is gravely concerned about the situation in Ukraine, that deteriorated rapidly following the military operation launch on 24 February, forcing thousands of people to flee their homes seeking safety in other parts of the country and across international borders. The full impact of the situation is not yet clear and is changing by the day. But it is evident that there is a disastrous impact on the already challenging humanitarian situation.

The number of people fleeing is rising and there is now a risk of large-scale displacement both within the country, in immediate neighboring countries and beyond with paramount new humanitarian needs. The UN estimates that 12 million people inside Ukraine will need relief and protection, while more than 4 million Ukrainian refugees may need protection and assistance in neighbouring countries in the coming months.

In neighbouring countries, UNHCR has scaled up its response in support to host countries to be able to respond to possible refugee movements. UNHCR has a presence in Belarus, Hungary (Multi-Country Office), Poland, and Romania. Slovakia and Moldova are covered by the Hungary Multi-Country Office. However, additional staff are being deployed to reinforce respective country offices as well as remote support in light of the emergency context.

UNHCR is developing a Regional Refugee Response Plan (RRP), involving partners UNDP, WHO, Save the Children, HelpAge International, INTERSOS, Project Hope, UNFPA, NRC, UNICEF, WFP, and IOM. UNHCR’s coordination role includes providing technical support to authorities, and several surge missions and deployments have taken place to Moldova, Poland, and Romania.
