About Appeal

Malaysian pianist Sean Gan has taken long strides to become an excellent musician. Currently a graduating student at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music in Singapore, he is pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Piano Performance programme under the masterful guidance of pianist Prof. Albert Tiu. He has recently accepted an offer to attend the two-year Master of Music Piano Program at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York. This offer includes a generous financial aid of US$35,000 (total annual tuition fee is US$53,300).

However, the high living costs in New York along with the remaining tuition fees are still too much of a challenge for him and his family. Coming from a modest family in Seremban, his musical journey so far would not have been possible through generous coverage by scholarships and grants. Nonetheless, attending Juilliard is a chance that he will not want to forego, as he sees himself having potential to grow into an even better musician if given a chance to study at this world-renowned, high-standard institution. He is reaching out to everyone who would like to make his dream to attend closer to possible.

According to Juilliard's page of cost of attendance, it would take roughly USD$70000-80000 in total to cover a year's worth of expenses (minus scholarship, it will be around USD$45,000). However, if his remaining annual tuition costs of USD$18,300 can be funded through other means, it will greatly reduce the burden of having to take up substantial amount of loans in order to study there. Therefore, he is raising funds for the total of the remaining tuition fees he has to cover for two years, equal to USD$36,600, or approximately SGD$49,500.

Hi again Sean. We met at Layla’s house back in June. I was back home in Penang and had a chat with a friend who was born in Negri. She said she had forwarded your appeal to Tengku Ali. Hopefully that would be of some help. Anyway reminded me again that I should do more to help my fellow Malaysians ;-). All the best and I do hope you make it to New York!!
