I am Assan AA Sallah, a Gambian asylum seeker living in Hong Kong for 5 years. After leaving school I studied an Advanced Diploma in International Relations. I volunteered with the Red Cross from 2007 and became a qualified dissemination trainer in 2011. In early 2014 I decided to resign my involvement with the Red Cross, (a neutral and impartial organization) due to my interests in campaigning for justice and equality and becoming host to a civic education program at a local radio station. My initiation of a student organization called ‘Future Diplomats, The Gambia’, with two other students, led to my arrest in September 2014, when I was detained and tortured for 25 days. I was arrested again 6 days later and charged with attempting to destabilize the peace of the country and using a PA system without a police permit. It was after my second arrest that I believed I would not be given a fair trial and acted on advice to leave The Gambia.

Since arriving in Hong Kong, I have spent 2 years from 2015- 2017 as an approved trainee at Crossroads and I have spent 2 years from 2016-2018 advocating for asylum seekers and refugees with Red Cross Hong Kong as a guest speaker. 

I am very proud to share the news of my recent acceptance into University of Sunderland to study BA (Hons) Business and Management (Stage 2). As there is no financial support from the HK government for asylum seekers to continue education past the age of 15, I am now faced with the daunting challenge of finding sponsorship to pay for my tuition, with no legal ability to work, volunteer or raise money for myself. 

I would be so grateful to anyone who might be able to provide any financial relief and/or assistance to me to pay for my tuition. My fees are HK$19,600 per term (x3) for year 1, with a similar schedule of fees required for year 2. (2 x HKD$58,800 = HKD$117,600).

With the opportunity to continue my education, I believe I will have a brighter future. I thank you in advance for your consideration!
