About Appeal

THANK YOU!

Dear donors,

The fundraising event has been a success and we have managed to raise more than RM80,000 which is the combination of your donation as well as ticket sales for the "Invest In The Future, for refugee education". We are still in the midst of tabulating the donation and once we have the final figure, it will be made known to you and subsequently, we will show you our deliverables after consulting UNHCR Malaysia on how the funds should be allocated. We would like to thank you immensely for your contribution in making this cause possible and for us on the ground, we will continue to volunteer our time via the weekly the Saturday tutoring event at various refugee schools in Malaysia to make education for possible for the thousands of refugee children.

Thank you again for taking time and being generous in helping our cause. You have indeed made a difference!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Malaysia is not party to the 1951 Refugee Convention and lacks a legislative and administrative framework to address refugee matters. As all asylum-seekers and refugees are treated as irregular migrants, and in the absence of any substantive engagement by the authorities, UNHCR remains the principal actor in providing international protection.

As a result of the current policies, Malaysia presents a challenging and difficult environment for refugees in which basic survival is difficult as they cannot work legally and are at risk of arrest as illegal migrants. The situation is particularly difficult for refugee children. In spite of the Government of Malaysia having signed the Convention on the Rights of the Child which obligates the Government to ensure education for all primary-aged children in Malaysia, no refugee children are allowed to attend Government schools. Of the 20,000 refugee children in Malaysia, 12,000 of them are school-aged. What education is available is provided by UNHCR in partnership with the refugee communities and NGO partners. At present only 7,000 refugee children are participating in the existing, very basic education programmes that are available in the 126 UNCHR registered refugee schools.

On 16 April 2015, the government once again denies refugee children entry into public school  (http://goo.gl/dPirqq) as Malaysia is not a party to the 1951 Refugee Convention.

We are fundraising for refugee education for 126 schools as UNHCR Malaysia will cease to afford its payment to refugee teachers in July 2015, due to lack of funds. We rely on voluntary contributions from supporters like you to help fund our work for children.
