After dramatic challenges Orang Asli villagers of Pos Woh have been through, they are 1 step away from making their dream true!
The construction process has not been easy due to extremely challenging circumstances, and the villagers still need RM16799 to complete the building.
Let’s combine our efforts and make something truly wonderful happen for the children of Pos Woh!
In 1.5 years of teaching children of Pos Woh, our international volunteering crew has collected hundreds of books, stationaries, media devices and assisted in installing a satellite at the village, to provide the indigenous children and their parents a stable internet connection.
Unfortunately, there was no proper building that the villagers can use for the classes and store the shared education materials.
At the moment children have to conduct activities outdoors. The villagers have offered a piece of land to build such a building, the safe space for the children to learn, develop and grow, where their own teachers from the neighboring villages and the volunteers from different institutions could organize educational workshops, English classes and skill-building social activities! We need your help to complete the construction of our learning centre!
My name is Valerie and I spent 6 months living with the villagers of Semai tribe in Pos Woh as a full-time teacher, and I have been voluntarily teaching their children online for 1.5 years now. Some of my students attend government schools in the nearby towns, some of them don't go to school at all. For those who attend government schools, it is extremely challenging to keep up with their classmates in English classes, as English is not their second, but their third language, the indigenous children speak Semai at home and Malaysian in schools. The lack of internet connection at the village and media devices (e.g. computers laptops, tablets and mobile phones, that Semai families are not able to afford) made it extremely difficult for Orang Asli children to succeed in their studies. However, with an individual approach to each student, using internationally approved ESL technics, we have found a way to keep our Orang Asli students focused and enthusiastic in their studies at all times, their language skills were massively improved and it has been noticed by their parents and teachers. In just 6 months students have achieved tremendous success in their studies: - 14 children have learned how to read and write in English - 11 children can now operate simple sentences, using the vocabulary consisting of 200+ words - 6 children can speak fluently, feel confident in writing essays and having a conversation in English. After I had to leave the village, the villagers themselves have decided to take over their children's education and establish a center, where their children could learn, grow and develop, and they asked us to help them in raising money for the construction of such building. We have completed the pervious fundraiser in May 2021 but the prices on construction materials went up during last months and the villagers need more support to complete the building.
Original message from MPPKOA, the villagers' committee:
