Hearing is one of the key senses individuals use to express, learn and connect. Hearing loss, particularly in childhood, is a public health issue that can have severe and long-lasting impacts on a child's development and well-being. Early intervention and therapy for hearing issues are critical for a child's language, social and academic development. With the right support to acquire language abilities, social skills and academic performance, the potential for the hearing impaired youth are endless. Syed Haizam’s daughter was diagnosed with hearing impairment at the age of 3 and underwent cochlear implant surgery at the age of 4. Through this journey came the deep realisation that the access and cost of treatment would be a barrier for many in Malaysia. With the aspiration to provide better access to hearing health care, members of the Selangor royal family embarked on an expedition to Mount Kilimanjaro - the highest single free-standing mountain in the world at a height of 5,895m above sea level - to raise funds to build a speech and hearing centre in the Raja Tun Uda Library. The expedition is led by His Highness Crown Prince of Selangor Tengku Amir Shah Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, accompanied by Dato’ Setia Aubry Rahim Mennesson, Dato’ Syed Haizam Jamalullail and Tengku Ezrique Ezzuddean Tengku Ardy Esfandiari. Joining them is a friend, Keong Yeen Yeoh. The Raja Tun Uda Library currently offers enhanced facilities to enable the differently abled to access the library collections. All funds raised will go directly into building and activating a speech and hearing aid centre which will offer free hearing tests and subsidised follow-up treatments. The centre will further support inclusivity at the library, and share the joy of literature to all abilities. More information on the library: https://yprtu.org.my/
