Who we areWe are students who attend JEMS Character Academy and we are in the Purple Level (P4 students). This year, we have been learning to grow in our empathy and compassion for people with Cleft Lip and Plate in our community. Why we careChildren with Cleft Lip and Palate face many needs and challenges that typical children may not think about. For example, those with Cleft Lip and Palate often have difficulty with eating and drinking, producing sounds and words, and in developing healthy peer relationships. Having Empathy and Compassion for those with Cleft Lip and Palate means being able to step into their shoes and trying to understand how they might feel; then choosing to do something about it.Our SolutionLuckily, Cleft Lip and Palate is a very treatable condition, and can be easily fixed through surgery. Babies can receive surgery between 1 and 15 months of age, and can undergo follow-up surgeries if needed. After surgery, speech therapy is often the next step in recovery. Patients will usually see speech therapists to help them with producing speech, sounds, and overall pronunciation. Perhaps most importantly, treating those with Cleft Lip and Palate with respect and dignity as with any other person can help them build their confidence and sense of belonging.Who we want to support and why - HKACLP (Hong Kong Association for Cleft Lip and Palate)Hong Kong Association for Cleft Lip and Palate’s mission is to provide speech therapy, counseling, and training and educational sessions for patients, family members, schools and the general public. Our fundraising goalWe want to raise $10,000 HKD to help children affected by cleft lip and palate to help them have the resources they need to persevere in being understood as we continue to understand and empathise with them.More about our other projectsJEMS Character Academy was founded in 2009 and is an after-school learning centre with a vision to see children become junior excellent members of society. With a belief that education goes beyond transferring knowledge and skills, JEMS provides children with Character Education programmes throughout the year.   As a part of encouraging students to give back to the community, it is JEMS' hope that students will grow in their empathy and compassion for different needs in our city through the unique JEMS curriculum where students are encouraged to make a difference in the lives of others. As a result, students across various school levels have chosen to start a campaign to fundraise for different charities that help and support some of the needs in Hong Kong.
