I will be travelling to New York on the 31 October for running the marathon on the 03 November. My entire trip including flights, hotel and entry are 100% self sponsored. I lost my Dad to lymphoma (cancer of the blood) in 2001 so I know what it is like to lose a loved one and somebody you depend on so much . Although due to circumstances, we didn't utilise a hospice, I appreciate the good work that hospices similar to Dover Park achieve. To summarise why I have chosen Dover Park as my Singapore charity is because they are open to everyone regardless of age, race, religion or income level. Their good work maximises quality of life for patients in their latter stages of life. Please consider making a donation, regardless of amount, every penny helps to support this charity! Hi! This is my first fundraising and I need your support. =) This fundraising came about when my friend Sheeli told me about her fundraising efforts - she pledged to complete Swissotel Vertical Marathon 2013 to raise funds for WWF's I for Tigers campaign (see http://www.simplygiving.com/sheelikuang). She asked me if I want to complete the race with her, and I said "yesh!" without much thought. As we talked about her fundraising, it dawned on me that I can help raise funds for a cause or charity too! So here I am asking for YOUR support and help in raising $3,000 for Dover Park Hospice as I train to complete the Swissotel Vertical Marathon on 24 Nov 2013 in 30 minutes. That's 76 storeys, 1,336 steps in 30 minutes! Did I mention that this will be my first marathon? =D Dover Park Hospice (DPH) is a secular, non-profit organisation that provides hospice care for terminally-ill patients. About 80% of their patients are heavily subsidised by DPH as the patients cannot afford palliative services. I decided to work with DPH because I believe in their work - to enhance the living, comfort the dying and support the grieving with compassion and dignity. Your donation will help to provide hospice care for DPH's patients, and bring comfort to them and their families at the most difficult period of their lives. Dear friends, colleagues and well-wishers, Thank you for visiting our fundraising page. We are Angel, Daryl, Joyce, Ian and Mike. We will be taking part in OCBC Cycle Singapore 2013 on 28/04/2013 and aiming to raise money for Dover Park Hospice, a charity serving those near the end of their lives and supporting their loved ones. The funds raised will go towards subsidising the expenses of the terminally ill who cannot afford to pay for their stay at Dover Park Hospice. Dover Park Hospice is one of the beneficiaries of the Business Times’ 39 km Charity Challenge. Whereas Angel, Daryl, Joyce and Ian, newbies in this area, are taking part in this segment of the OCBC Cycle, Mike, our newest member, is doing the extreme and gunning for the 59 km Super Challenge. We welcome him in our efforts to raise awareness and much needed funds. As staff (Angel and Daryl), volunteer (Joyce) and former caregiver (Ian), we have witnessed the pain, suffering and distress that patients and their loved ones experience. We have also experienced the relief and the care that hospice can provide. Mike, who is currently the Assistant Dean of Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, is also not new to hospice care. Hailing from the United Kingdom, Mike is from the home of the modern hospice movement and bring with him a strong tradition of community involvement in care for the less privileged. Due to the rising costs, to continue providing high quality hospice care for those reaching the end of life is becoming increasingly challenging. In addition to having a dedicated team of doctors and nurses who provide a high level of medical care to the terminally ill patients, we also have a retinue of psycho-social and support services staff that provides various new services such integrated home-care, bereavement support, caregiver training and a host of other capabilities, working closely together to support our patients and their families through one of the darkest periods of their lives. We believe that more can be done. Even as we do our part to help raise funds for a cause we believe in, will you support us? Please dig deep and donate, every little bit counts!
