Volunteering at Ideas Academy has connected me to the love and understanding of different cultures but, most importantly, it has emphasised how children are children the world over. They all have dreams and aspirations, can all be fun, naughty, mischievous, inventive, brave, funny but overall lovely and loving. The children at Ideas Academy do not come from easy backgrounds and, for some, it is a long trek to get to school but they all give their best when they are there and this makes teaching them the most pleasurable and rewarding experience. I think I end up gaining more from teaching them than the other way around. Their enthusiasm and love for life is infectious and it has been a pleasure to meet them. Some extra funding would help to spread joy and education to others who need help and develop a greater understanding of life and connections across the world. Please try to help them.

EDUCATE. ELEVATE. EMPOWER.There are millions of children across the globe who lack access to secondary education. In Malaysia, only 16% of refugee children aged 14-17 enrol in secondary education. Most of the refugee children will not continue to high school due to financial and social barriers.Ideas Academy is providing a solutionIdeas Academy is a secondary learning centre for underprivileged children, including refugee, stateless and undocumented children. Our primary aim is that every child between 12 and 18 years old should gain a strong foundation in secondary education so that they grow up becoming responsible, confident and compassionate citizens of tomorrow. Ideas Academy provides holistic learning using the Cambridge curriculum as well as life skill programme and extra-curricular activities to develop our students' soft skills. We started with a class of 24 students and we have over 160 students at the moment and a growing waiting list. With your support, we hope that the Academy will be able to grow to approximately 300 students by 2020.Building a sustainable learning centreIdeas Academy is one of the few secondary level learning centres for refugees and has been able to keep its doors open by generous donations of foundations, corporations and individuals. The learning centre wishes to change its model from charity to social enterprise by opening up for Malaysians and foreigners who are looking for access to high-quality IGCSE education at competitive pricing. By opening our doors for Malaysian and foreign students in September 2019 we are building a more self-sustainable learning centre and we create a more inclusive form of education. In other words, each paying student will enrol one underprivileged student. Together we will be able to break the cycle of poverty and create better life opportunities for underprivileged. How will your donation help us?At the moment our learning centre is limited to accommodate a maximum of 175 students. A renovation is needed to accommodate approximately 300 students in the near future and to keep providing excellent education we wish to extend our educational program and expand our team of qualified teachers. No matter how big or small any donation is significant and appreciated. Your kind donation will enable us to bring the power of education to more underprivileged children and help them go one step further towards a brighter future.Donate. Share. Fundraise. In October I am travelling to Kuala Lumpur to do voluntary work at Ideas Academy. This academy is a project of my brother, Jan Willem Smulders, and offers refugees a secondary education. This academy aims to offer them hope to create a future and change their situation. My sister-in-law teaches at this school and they currently have 175 students following the Cambridge IGCSE curriculum. Recently some sponsors have withdrawn their gifts and these students risk loosing their chances. Please help me by making a big or small donation so I cannot only offer my personal help in education in October, but also a big bag of MONEY!

EDUCATION FOR ALL! Young Refugee Cause

As most of you may have noticed.. I talk a lot about the Ideas academy.  It all started about 10 years ago when I first moved to Kuala Lumpur. I met a wonderfully funny & crazy mum Andrea (2 sets of twins hence the craziness) who, during one of her 'G&T mummy playdate while kids go mad in garden', told me about a primary school for refugees she would teach in. She brought me along one day and after that..I could not leave . Why? Because once you get really involved,  its hard to ignore and sit back. These kids were so excited just to get any attention from us 'teachers". Any knowledge they could get, any distraction from the sadness, confusion, fear that they felt, would make them happy. So simple. I just needed to show up and offer them some English words ..and they were happy. The tiny room they would all sit & sweat in, on tiny stools , smiling at me and waiting to be enlightened, engaged, distracted. Its heartbreaking .Then to come home and see the amazing schools our children get to attend without any thought to it. Most refugee children stop school at 11, 12yrs old, as there are only 3 schools offering secondary education  ( ideas academy being one of the three). When it matters most, they would have to stop, and join the work force. This is why we need ideas academy. They need to know that they need to persevere on those tiny stools, in that sweaty tiny room, because there is more to come. They need to have hope that they can create a future and change their situation. This is only possible if they have access to education. So from teaching in this school, to getting involved in fundraising initiatives,  and then partnering with Ideas to create the Ideas Academy , with a batch of 25 students in 2014 , we now have 175 students following the Cambridge IGCSE curriculum.  Refugees in Malaysia are given no legal rights. None. They are allowed to blend in but they have to fend for themselves. They are waiting in no mans land to be given a country ‘home’ but this could take years. Its not their fault, and its just not right.    Ideas academy is working hard to become self sustainable by opening up to paying students from low income families who may not fit into the public school system. This is crucial to becoming a self reliant entity so we can grow and not depend on sponsors and donors. But to do this we need your help! Any donation big or small would make you a part of this possibility. Please help!
