Bianca and I will be running a 10km (competitive) race in Singapore on 21 July 2013 to raise money for the Singapore Cancer Society (SCS). It is a race that celebrates cancer survivors and caregivers, remembers loved ones lost to cancer, and offers a chance to fight back against the dreadful disease that is responsible for far too many deaths worldwide. This will be Bianca’s first-ever 10km race and my second competitive run in Singapore, the first being the J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge where I came 236th out of over 16,700 participants. Our goal is to raise SG$1000 (approx. £500). I have just received Linklaters’ approval for their employee matched-donation scheme – this means that they will match funds we raise up to a maximum of £500. Therefore, every dollar you donate will be worth twice as much to the charity. About the SCS: The Singapore Cancer Society was established in 1964 by individuals from the Rotary Club of Singapore West, the Lions Club and Jaycees, and was inaugurated by the then Minster of Health, Mr Yong Nyuk Lin. For the past 49 years, the Society has helped countless patients in need and pushed the cancer cause in Singapore through its many programmes and services which include: •Cancer treatment subsidies •Financial and welfare aid •Hospice and palliative home care services •Community oncology home care services •Free transportation to/from cancer treatment •Rehabilitative Support •Cancer screening •Cancer research •Public Education It is a self-funded voluntary health organisation that depends on public donations to fund all its services and programmes. The Society is endorsed by the Ministry of Health and is a member of the National Council of Social Service. It also has IPC (Institute of Public Character) status as a charity since 1995. This is my 7th year of running marathons, but this is my FIRST time doing fundraising while running a marathon. This time round, I'm running 15km race. Having known people close to me etc who have cancer, I would like to do my part and help raise funds to assist in anyone suffering from cancer in Singapore. My usual marathon limit is 10km, but I'm going to push myself for another 5km to raise funds for Singapore Cancer Society. I hope you will provide your support by donating! Every amount counts!
