Rebuilding with LOVE

Hi everyone, I'm Sammizhen, aka Chris Lim. I'm a drag queen in Singapore and I've been performing in the LGBTQ scene since 1999.

Throughout my years in the LGBT scene as a performer, I've encountered and befriended many people from all walks of life. I've also seen many issues and problems that arises with time.

"Coming out" in Singapore is never easy. It was worse back in 1999. I've seen people being chased out of their homes by their parents or even siblings. I was also once a "runaway" during the time that I came out to my family. I wasn't thrown out by my family but rather I was very awkward being myself when I was at home. I spend nights shuttling between the houses of different friends. 3 days at friend A's house, 2 nights at friend B's house and the weekends will be spent at the saunas as they are opened 24hrs over the weekend.

Subsequently the scene was hit with other problems like drug abuse and "chem orgies". I've seen many friends being arrested and sentenced to jail. Very often I wondered if things will be different if they had someone to talk to? Would things be different if they were to hang out with the "right" group of friends?

Hence therefore, I've decided to collaborate with Mr Nic Lim of GLBT Voices on Facebook and open a halfway house/help Centre for the community as I feel that there's a genuine need for the next generation. Hopefully they will not have to go through what we've been through. Thank you.

The shelter will be set up to provide LGBTQ youths who face hostile familial situations due to their sexuality. Singapore has no social support for disenfranchised LGBT youth who face emotional and sometimes even physical abuse at the hands of family members over their sexuality. ‘Coming out’ is often a traumatic experience for most, and it is not uncommon for some to succumb to depression and even suicide. Providing a safe environment for these youth to slowly come to terms with their personal situations would enable them to recover and seek further options without the heavy emotional stress of needing a bed for the night as well as meals. The shelter will also be equipped with a small library, with books for personal reading (LGBT topics) and a couple of computers for research and communication. The shelter will be operational 24/7
