Personal Challenge

My Story

WHAT IS SILENT SUPPORT? We are a group of secondary school students who have decided to make a stand. We will spread a message of charity, a message of hope. We will tell the world that there are people in need, people who are suffering, and people whose only sustenance is the love of those around them. And we will do this without saying a word. For the next two weeks, we will tape our mouths shut during our recess periods to try and raise funds for CalvaryLand, a social welfare centre where older adults, children and women in crisis are cared for and given a fresh start in life. We are trying to raise awareness for this organization, as well as collect RM 1500 for the benefit of CalvaryLand. Thank you so much for your support and donations! EVENT DETAILS Date : 7-10th August, 13-17th August Place : SMK Subang Utama, SS 18/1A, Subang Jaya, Selangor What's Going To Happen : We're going to go into the canteen, tape our mouths, and let the confusion begin! There will definitely be questions about why we are doing this, as well as a bit of ridicule and laughter. Good. Drawing attention to the plight of those less fortunate than us is our goal, and hopefully we can move some people to donate through Simply Giving. QUESTIONS YOU MAY WANT TO ASK "But why tape your mouths shut? Why not a simple vow of silence?" - Because as great as a vow of silence is, we feel that it's not noticeable enough. Sometimes you need an obvious, direct method of attracting attention, and we believe that this is one of those times. - Because the act of taping our mouths shut symbolizes the struggle of some people to have their voices heard, to be noticed in society. Sometimes we close our eyes and pretend that these people don't exist. A vow of silence is a voluntary act, whereas having your mouth taped shut usually connotes an involuntary silence. "Why do it during recess? Why not the entire school day?" - As much as we want to raise awareness, there are certain limits. To deliberately prevent yourself from talking during class, where interaction between teachers and students is extremely important, would be disrespectful of both the teachers and the education system, and we do not wish to offend anyone. - Recess time is much more personal for each student. It is where a student relaxes, has a bite to eat and something to drink, where he/she winds down and starts to socialize with their friends. It is the time most of us look forward to every day in school. By sacrificing something so important to us, we hope to send the message as effectively as possible. "Can I join? Do I have to be a student of SMK Subang Utama?" - Unfortunately, to take part in our current project in SMK Subang Utama, you have to be a student here. If you are, you are very welcome to join. Just send me an e-mail containing your name and class at [email protected]. Parental consent is a must, though! - If you're not a student of SMK Subang Utama, but you are interested in starting this project in your own school, I'd be happy to help! Just send me an e-mail and I'd be happy to assist you in any way I can.
