Just in the last 5 years, we have lost a few of our close friends and a number of acquaintances to cancer. Some of them can afford to give their loved ones a comfortable goodbye, some can't. Some choose to terminate care as it gets unaffordable. It doubles their pain to see loved ones in their last days, and not to be able to provide even basic care. We cant take away their pain - but we can give some support - even if its just a feed of milk a day or a change of diaper, or support in medicines. Please donate to this cause.

Hello :) Thanks for visiting my fundraising page.On 5th March 2017, I will be running my first ever half-marathon, and will be raising funds for the Singapore Cancer Society. As a medical student, cancer is a recurring theme over the course of our studies- we learn about it from various aspects- its biochemistry, genetics, epidemiology, the list goes on. But cancer has also touched my life on a personal level. At the age of 12, when no one could believe I could achieve anything in gymnastics, Coach Zhu believed in me. Over my 5 years under her, she has taught me how hard work and persistence can trump natural talent, and made me into the person I am today. Her style of training was tough and unforgiving, and physical conditioning was often used as a punishment. One of my nicknames was "racing horse- 赛马", because somehow I always did better at running than other kinds of physical conditioning! She fought a courageous 4 year battle with cancer- inspiring many with her endless dedication and selflessness. http://www.straitstimes.com/sport/gymnastics-coach-zhu-xiaoping-loses-cancer-fightSo in the midst of the hectic 8 week Cambridge term (and looming HNA exams), I will be training for and running a half marathon. Each step, each mile, is a tribute to Coach Zhu's spirit, and a reminder of the lessons she has taught me over the past 5 years- of perseverance, dedication and selflessness.  The Singapore Cancer Society is a community-based voluntary welfare organisation that is dedicated to maximizing lives by minimizing the impact of cancer. Your donation will help those in need directly through the provision of financial assistance and medical equipment (UK friends: Healthcare is not free in Singapore), increasing screening and public education, and also help to fund cancer research and advocacy. Please donate what you can for this great cause- every little bit counts! Thank you :)

In 2014, my mum was diagnosed with Stage 3 Nose Cancer. Having gone through multiple rounds of radiotherapy, immunotherapy and chemotherapy, she has put up a strong fight against the disease. She eventually passed on in January 2018, but her indomitable spirit never dies! Me having been in the role of a caregiver, I understand and have seen through the painful and tiring experience of chemotherapy sessions and I know the queing and waiting is terrible. Here's the facts:There are more patients each day, and that number is growing. There are limited number of nurses at each station. There are limited number of beds/machines/chairs.There are overwhelmingly a lot of drugs needed.Do you know a large part of the time spent in hospital is because of the waiting. Each session lasts for a couple of hours but due to resource constraints it could easily take up a full day! Many of these patients needs to do chemo at least once a week, some 3 times and more!Worse still, in each visit patients have to face dozens of times of needle poking and blood taking.Of course, I have not even mentioned the side effects of the treatment eg. hair loss, weight loss, appetite loss etc. So Support me as once again, I will be running the Sundown Marathon to raise funds to alleviate this issue, or support them as they fight against cancer. Sleep can wait. But they cannot afford to wait!Thank you in advance for the kind donation!*Disclaimer: I am in no way affiliated to SCS. Funds raised will go to SCS directly. *Update May 2018: This page was first created last year, but fresh funds raised will continue to contribute directly to the beneficiary: SCS.

As this is my first marathon, I am hoping to use this as a platform to raise funds for my chosen charity the Singapore Cancer Society and additionally to raise awareness about the importance of a healthy and fit lifestyle. As for the cause I chose, I have had family members who have passed away due to lung cancer, and this is a cause that I feel is close to my heart.

So many of us have had experiences with cancer, through friends, loved ones, or even a personal battle. My grandparents had cancer, and it was heartbreaking to watch them fight and slowly lose their strength. Being able to give back through the Sundown with Love initiative is a small way that I can hope to contribute.

Hello allI think everyone knows that I am no runner, nor am I the fittest bloke around and so...... I've decided to participate in a half marathon to raise money for Singapore Cancer Society. The organisation is dedicated to minimising the impact of cancer through public education, screening, patient services, financial assistance, research and advocacy. After seeing many people contract such a deadly disease, I believe that with ample education and screening tests, we can hopefully reduce the probability of contracting the disease or at least an early diagnosis of it. For the sick, financial assistance is especially crucial as the medication don't come cheap. Please support my cause - all donations go to the Singapore Cancer Society (don't worry - I can't take any of it) and let's all gather at the finishing line of the Army Half Marathon and laugh at my dying face. I would expect a physical pint of beer at the end of the race if you do show up.LoveNick

Unfortunately I, like most people, have had friends and family affected by cancer. Unlike the past the prognosis for those affected is now much better with many new and novel treatments available. These treatments  along with better diagnosis, increased public awareness and improved education on the risk factors make the future much more positive than before. We, at MSD, can be very proud of our contribution to the advancement in treatments. The Singapore Cancer Society does a superb job at not only supporting those directly impacted by cancer but also their immediate family. This support is holistic in that it helps impacted families in many other non-medical areas such as counseling, financial advice, diet etc. I am delighted to have the opportunity to support this very worthy cause. So I ask you to do what you can to support this cause - please contribute what you can as every cent counts!!

Like most people, cancer has struck very near home for me: my mother is a two times cancer survivor. She battled the disease, the chemotherapy and the associated physical and emotional trauma, not once but twice – in 1986 and in 2004 – with determination and aplomb. She is a successful education entrepreneur who did not let the disease conquer her willpower, and continued to work through with sheer grit and determination. She retired from her full-time involvement as a founder-entrepreneur only last year in 2015 at the age of 75. To me, our family and the thousands of students who have been through her school system, she is a terrific role model and an amazing inspiration.

I had never expected she will be down with breast cancer 10 years ago...hers was hereditary. She found me at NL Building and took me to the toilet and there she took off her blouse. I was surprised and reminded her to stay and think positive that time though i know she may be sad but will not reveal her true feelings or inner feelings to people. Cancer was indeed scary to both of us. Fyi, I am a chronic patient myself too. I did tell her that i might die earlier than her as doctors had already detected a slight cirrhosis in my Liver. I didn't give up any hope, ...instead i start my strict diet regime and exercise and did cross training through swimming, runnning and gym too.I even read inspirational books, thinking positively and started all the positive things around me through volunteering.  Just in mid April this year , i received a FB msg from her classmate that she passed away. I was shocked and could not accept her sudden death. The following two days were my commitment to rugby sports volunteering. I was determined that i had to tell the truth to my volunteer in charge that i had to take time off to attend the wake in Punggol. I even messaged my school teacher that i had to send her off on her last journey which was a working Monday. Most of her classmates were unable to make it as they were working. When i took a last glance at her from coffin, her obituary photo and blue clear skies i knew she had reported to heaven. She will never come back again. So this year, i decide to run in Race Against Cancer 2016 as a charity athlete in memory of her
