Breast Cancer Foundation

I know too many beautiful people that have been affected by cancer, especially breast cancer. It is horrible to see people you care about have to go through this unnecessary experience. The more we can raise and help, the closer we can come to eradicating these diseases.

This is my second run running the entire series of The Performance Series.  I am dedicating the four races to my mother who succumbed to breast cancer in 2017.  Early detection of breast cancer is important and Breast Cancer Foundation has been rolling out many activities to create such awareness.  Your generous donation to the Breast Cancer Foundation to support my cause is much appreciated.

Since the beginning of 2017, many people whom I know directly or indirectly have been diagnosed with cancers.  My children lost both their grandmothers within a month earlier this year.   My mother lost her battle with breast cancer and my mother-in-law to colon cancer.  Both were detected only at stage 4.  Raising funds for Breast Cancer Foundation will support their campaign in creating awareness on the importance of annual breast screening and regular self examination.   Breast cancer when detected at early stage can be treated.  Breast cancer survivors can continue to live a quality life with their loved ones.  Thank you for your support in advance.thank

Everyone who knows me that I am an educator and one of my teaching school's outcomes for our students is to be an altruist. I hope that I can combine both my passion for running and eagerness to help people and raise funds for them. At the same time, I hope to be a good role model to my students and inspire them to be altruistic too.

We all know cancer is a deadly disease that can strike anyone without notice. I have had two of my friends and extended family members lose the fight this year. So I am going to dedicate my 10th 10K race of the 2016 to The Breast Cancer Foundation. I will attempt to do the race in less than 58 minutes (which is my current Personal Best).

I'm just a ordinary person who had went through spinal operation in 2004. I had overcome all odds and embarked in running about six years ago. Wouldn't it be better if my participation in The Performance Series (TPS) run can at the same time help others who need  support? i would like to do something for the ladies by raising funds for Breast Cancer Foundation (BCF) and encourage all ladies in keeping fit through sports. With that in mind, i decided to contribute my little efforts in charitable causes by going into SimplyGiving.com platform, and chosen BCF as the main charity to support. Breast cancer has become one of the top causes of cancer deaths in Singapore for women. Many women from lower income family, or who were not aware and little knowledge, shun or simply cannot afford to get a mammogram despite being in the recommended age group (40 and above) for regular breast screening so as to detect symptoms of breast cancer at the early stages.Early detection saves lives and saves breasts! Please lend me your support and be a change-maker for the less privileged.

Breast Cancer Foundation

Breast Cancer Foundation (BCF) is a non-profit organisation set up in 1997 with the mission to eradicate breast cancer as a life-threatening disease. Being an advocacy group, BCF propagates awareness and education through talks, events, exhibitions and publications, and advocates early detection through regular screening. Support and volunteer programmes are organised for survivors and their family members, caregivers and volunteers through counselling, training, empowerment and ‘Healing Through The Arts’ activities. BCF is one of the few breast cancer advocacy groups in the world with a Men’s Support League to emphasise men’s role in society’s fight against this affliction. Just started running and decided if I'm running, it might as well be for a good cause. Had a choice between Breast Cancer Foundation or the Singapore Association for Mental Health (SAMH) and decided on the latter. Personally, I feel that despite Singapore being a developed nation, mental health and associated illnesses still seem to be a taboo subject. There is a misconception that seeking help for mental health is a show of weakness and there seems to be a general lack of understanding about mental illnesses/disorders. I have seen people shun patients with mental disorders due to discrimination, lack of understanding of the ailment, fear, or a combination of everything. Hopefully, there can be increased coverage and education to raise awareness and understanding about mental health such that it will no longer be a stigma. This will allow people suffering from mental illness to feel comfortable seeking help earlier and have a better chance at getting better.

Our small clique of fellow sports lovers who engage in running, triathlon, kayaking, rock climbing, martial arts and and mountain trekking are raising funds for Breast Cancer Foundation (BCF) through our participation in JustRunLah's latest running event, The Performance Series (TPS).Becoming and keeping fit through sports is cool and all, but wouldn't it be better if what we do can at the same time help others who need our support? With that in mind, we decided to hop onto the SimplyGiving.com platform, and contribute our little part to the efforts of charitable causes. BCF is the main charity that we have chosen to support, with other charities that will be added to our list as we move along.Breast cancer has become one of the top causes of cancer deaths in Singapore for women (small tip - men can get it too. About 1 in 400 diagnosed cases of breast cancer are in men!). Many women from lower income brackets, or who were not equipped with the necessary awareness and knowledge, shun or simply cannot afford to get a mammogram despite being in the recommended age group (40 and above) for regular breast screening so as to detect symptoms of breast cancer at the early stages.BCF has a BEAM15 (BCF Encouragement for Active Mammograms - the 15 represents the scheme being launched on BCF's 15th anniversary) scheme that heavily subsidises the mammogram procedure for lower income earners. Help us to spread the message of awareness to everyone and to empower more women to be able to afford the much needed screenings.Early detection saves lives and saves breasts! Please lend us your support and be a change-maker for the less privileged in doing so!

<<< Thank you for visiting our fundraising page! Our usual fundraising portal is GIVEasia (https://give.asia/movement/mental_muscle_sahara_race_namibia_2016), however, due to technical difficulties encountered, we are temporarily migrating our fundraising portal to Simplygiving. We apologise for any inconveniences caused. Do drop us an email at [email protected] if you have any queries. Thank you for supporting Mental Health and SAMH! >>>Hello, we are four medical students from Singapore and in May 2016, we will be taking part in a Desert Race, as a team called “Mental Muscle”. The race will be held in Namib Desert, found in Namibia, south of the African Continent. It will span 7 consecutive days, where we have to cover a total distance of 250km each.We will be running to raise funds and awareness for Mental Health. In our society, many do not understand mental illnesses as much as other ailments of the body. As a result, there is a stigma that surrounds mental health and it has very real effects on people who have mental illnesses, even preventing them from seeking help. Our team hopes to address this stigma. To this end, we are very privileged to share that we will be working closely with the Singapore Association for Mental Health (SAMH) as our fundraising beneficiary. SAMH is the oldest community mental health agency in Singapore. It is a non-profit, voluntary welfare organisation seeking to promote mental health in the community and improve the rehabilitation and reintegration of persons with mental illness. Our goal is to raise $50,000 for SAMH and the funds will be used in 3 areas: 1. Building a vocational training school for teenagers and young adults affected by psychiatric conditions to equip them with skills required in the workforce, enabling them to integrate into society. 2. Increasing SAMH's awareness campaigns including roadshows and health talks. 3. Sustain SAMH’s existing services and facilities. From now till May 2016, our team, consisting of Nicholas Eu, Jonathan See, Stephen Hwang and Jon Tan, will be training hard and working diligently to realise this dream. We have been making small steps towards this goal, and you can follow us on the following platforms for more information and regular updates about our team, our training progress and awareness campaign: • Official website – www.mentalmuscle.org • Facebook page – www.facebook.com/mentalmuscle • Instagram – www.instagram.com/mental.muscle • SAMH website – www.samhealth.org.sg • Our email (ask us any questions) – [email protected] you believe in our team and our cause, we hope you will consider donating and contributing to our fundraising goal of $50,000. Every donation counts towards making our campaign a success. From the very bottom of our hearts, we thank you for supporting us along this journey. Every kind contribution made will be received with our deepest gratitude. To end off, here is some food for thought:Psychologist Guy Winch, in his TED talk made an interesting point. It is easy for us to go to someone with a mental health issue and say, "It's all in your head, why don't you just snap out of it?". Yet how often do we walk up to someone with a broken leg, and say, "It's all in your leg, why don't you just walk it off?" Mental illnesses are fundamentally similar to many diseases we know of, with well studied disease mechanisms and treatment options available. Why then do we find ourselves less empathetic towards people with mental illness? Why are we so eager to treat heart diseases or diabetes and yet so reluctant to approach mental illnesses?
