I am taking part in the SUKA Society Charity Climb in which I will be climbing Mt Kinabalu over two days to raise funds for their pre-school centres in 3 Indigenous Villages.

In Malaysia, only 6 out of 100 Indigenous children who enter school, complete their high school education. This is partly because many Indigenous children do not have access to pre-school education. Our current education syllabus begins by requiring all students to have basic reading, writing and mathematics skills, and Indigenous children who attend school without pre-school education are falling behind at the start and most fail to catch up, which eventually leads to them dropping out of school. Without access to proper education, many Indigenous communities will continue to be trapped within the vicious cycle of poverty and struggle to be self-sustainable.

To help combat this problem, Suka Society launched the Empowered2Teach program in 2014. This initiative enables young children between the ages of four to six to receive early childhood education by empowering the Indigenous communities living in remote areas to run their own pre-school classes within their villages. This project supports 6 pre-school classes in the villages near Slim River, Gopeng, Gerik, Tapah and Gua Musang. This year, they are training another 10 pre-school teachers to launch pilot pre-school programs in their respective communities.  

We aim to raise RM100,400 (approx. AUD33,200) in funds and sponsorships which will go towards engaging a teacher, a teaching assistant and school expenses for the existing pre-schools in Gerik, Gopeng and Gua Musang and as well as sponsorships for 60 Indigenous children.

My personal target is to raise:

·       RM2,500 in funds (approx. AUD830)

·       3 x Student Sponsorships (RM840/year/student or approx. AUD280/year/student)
