Istika Jaya is a community-based
education centre, providing early education for the Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing
children from pre-school up to primary school for the transit programme. We
have been operating for the past 5 years, and need funding to cover the meals
and fees for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing children whose family is from the poor
background. We will also be upgrading by renovation and purchasing items to replace the old ones. Our centre is the only centre that accommodate Deaf and
Hard-of-Hearing children in Malaysia. The centre is established and conducted
by Deaf teachers who are skillful and are using the native language of the
community for teaching and learning.
For Deaf children, as early as 0-4
years old is the most critical period for them to learn language especially
Malaysian Sign Language (BIM), and to prepare those who are 5-6 years old
before they enter school. The inability to master language will hinder their
progress to excel academically. Besides learning skills, we also guide the Deaf
and Hard-of-Hearing children on their social and communication skills.
As government funding is getting
limited, we have to source our own funds to provide education to the children.
Thus, Istika Jaya will play a pivotal role in preparing the children in their
education and potentially their career in the future.
