My Story

Hello, my name is Michelle and I am a recent graduate in the class of 2022 from the Canadian International School of Hong Kong. Over the past year, I have had the pleasure of volunteering at the Hong Kong Shark Foundation (HKSF) and working alongside Andrea Richey, HKSF's executive director. Through this experience, I have learned about the issue of the consumption of shark products, especially in Hong Kong. 

Hong Kong Shark Foundation (HKSF) is a registered charity dedicated exclusively to shark conservation. The foundation aims to raise awareness about shark conservation, particularly the unsustainable practice of shark finning, and to reduce the consumption of shark products in Hong Kong.

Issue of Shark Fin Trade in Hong Kong
Every year, over 100 million sharks are caught worldwide for shark fins and other products, with over 50% of the world’s shark fins being traded through Hong Kong alone. As apex predators, sharks are a crucial part of the marine food chain. The demand for shark products has contributed to the rapid decline of many species, with several already nearing extinction. This is an important issue as the scope goes beyond just sharks, as they play an important role in our ocean ecosystems and the entirety of the earth.
