My Story

In areas across the Philippines, dumpsites and graveyards are home to the poorest families who live in communities of extreme crisis and deprivation.  However inappropriate it sounds, child labour is the only way of survival for some of these families. Sending their children out to work to scavenge plastics and metals to sell for scrap value is a matter of survival with education not being a priority for many.  The men make charcoal to earn a living, but that in itself comes at an extreme cost and ailments such as tuberculosis are widespread. The people of the Tondo dumpsite have a life expectancy of 30 years of age. Most of these families can’t even manage to put one meal a day on the table. You probably can’t even begin to imagine how malnourished the children are.   The provision of health services, education and welfare for these children and their families is the only hope and that’s exactly what Jane Walker, Founder and Chairman of PCF has set out to do.  Purple Centers Foundation is an incredible education-centred organisation which provides critical support to these communities and this is how PCF is improving the lives of the poorest people in the Philippines.   Our relationship with Purple Centers Foundation began in 2010 when our engineers designed a new school constructed from used shipping containers. Almost a decade on and what are the results you might ask? The school facilitates education for the local children, it provides health services through its in-house clinic, and a team of social workers do an incredible and difficult role in identifying and monitoring the well-being of vulnerable children.  Many of the dumpsite children don’t exist in the system and the foundation assists the families in this long and complex registration process to obtain birth certificates so that they can attend state run schools in the future. And in the last two years a budding little community is springing up and developing around the school.    We're in training for the big Purlple Climb up Africa’s highest mountain with an elevation above sea of 5,895 m. On 3 September we start our Purple Climb up Mount Kilimanjaro. You can follow our journey to the summit here:
