Marine Conservation Cambodia (MCC) is a local NGO, working actively to protect
Cambodia’s ocean since 2008. MCC was the first organization to work on the
ground in marine conservation in the country.
Based in Kep province for 5 years, MCC works to restore the marine ecosystems and to protect the livelihoods of
local fishing communities.
MCC’s main goals are :
- To protect and restore healthy
and sustainable marine ecosystems while contributing to research
development on specific species;
- To support and empower small-scale fishing communities
who rely upon local marine resources for their food and livelihoods;
- To engage with local, regional and national government in the
development of sustainable fisheries and the implementation of an
extensive network of marine protected areas.
To reach them, MCC’s work mainly consists of:
- Conducting scientific research to support the
implementation of effective, scienced-based marine management regulations
(with research projects on dolphins, seahorses, seagrass and coral reefs);
- Building and deploying artificial habitats and fish aggregation
devices to help the ecosystem recovery ;
- Building and deploying anti-trawling underwater structures to
protect vulnerable and endangered marine species and their habitats against
destructive Illegal Unregulated and Unreported (IUU) fishing activities
- Raising awareness on the importance of marine
ecosystems, their role in providing fish supply and communities livelihood and
the threats they face;
- Creating marine and underwater oriented training program for
Cambodians and local stakeholders
