Guide
Dogs Singapore Ltd (GDS) is a social service charity, registered with the
National Council of Social Service (NCSS). We also hold the Institute of
Public Character (IPC) status, with Prof. Tommy Koh as our Patron. Our vision
is to have an inclusive society where every person who is blind or has visual
impairment is empowered for independent living. Our mission is to help these
people achieve their fullest potential within society. We aim to enhance
their quality of life and independence through our rehabilitation programmes
and outreach & advocacy work. Our rehabilitation programmes
include:
1. Orientation & Mobility (O&M) Training: Teach our clients with
visual impairment to understand their travel environment. Some skills taught
include using a white cane to detect obstacles, mental mapping, upper body
protection, and commucation skills.
2. Guide Dogs Programme: Guide dogs are proven to increase confidence,
safety and efficiency in travelling for people with visual impairment. We
match suitable dogs with our clients, who are then trained on how to work
their dogs and to look after them. Orientation & Mobility skills are
required for the use of a guide dog.
3. Activities of Daily Living (ADL) Training: We equip our clients with
everyday living skills, such as self-care, managing domestic tasks and the
use of technology so they can be independent in their daily routines.
Assessments and modifications are also made to our clients' living
environment (home, school and work) to ensure they can move around safely.
4. Client-centric Activities: We organise social events
and skill-based workshops regularly for our clients. It gives them an avenue
to make new friends, form communities of similar interests, and support one
another through learning and social interaction. Such activities also
encourage our clients to practice their mobility and independent living
skills out of their homes, ultimately increasing their confidence and
improving their skills through positive experiences.
5. IT Training: We teach our clients on how to use their smartphones and
computer with the help from different applications like screen readers,
navigation apps. These trainings help our clients to connect with their
family and friends through text and social apps, able to navigate better to
enhance independent travel, remaining relevant in the work force, shopping
for essential items and staying updated on current affairs and knowledge.
