Bayon Education and Development

The civil war that ended in the early 1990s destroyed the education system and schools. Cambodia remains one of the poorest countries in Southeast Asia: one third of the population lives below the poverty line, and half the population is under 25 years old.

Even today, few resources are allocated to education, resulting in a lack of infrastructure and qualified teachers. Unable to afford schooling for their children and not always aware of the importance of education, many families send their children out of school to work.

The majority of the inhabitants of Siem Reap and its surroundings live only from rice cultivation and often cannot provide for their families.

Our mission is to provide education to the underprivileged children and youth living in the Angkor temples area and the nearby villages.
Bayon School NGO has 4 main activities, all towards education:
•A primary school with 146 children from kindergarten to grade 6.
•A follow-up program for our former primary school students in public secondary schools, and even to university for some of them.
•A pastry school, a free vocational training in pastry and bakery for underprivileged women.
•A green garden project: families grow vegetables in their garden and supply the primary school’s canteen every day (260 lunches).
• An agroecology school: Our ambition is to train technicians in agroecological methods, able to innovate and carrying the values of sustainable development in their future profession.
