I am challenging myself - to trek in the Himalayas, with gear and everything, and raise funds for MindHK to help destigmatise mental health
My Story
Recently, I have been reflecting on just how short life can be and how much time I spent when I was younger being selfish, or unhappy, or immature. It is hard to say that was time wasted because I learned some important lessons and going through that made me who I am. One lesson I reflect back on is that life can present obstacles and those obstacles can have very little to do fairness or what you deserve. People get sick and that sickness can rob you of precious time. That sickness can be physical or it can be mental, or both. We often focus on the physical illness and we need to, but that should not be at the expense of focusing on the mental illnesses and challenges. Those can profoundly impact health, wellness and enjoyment of life. To flip this around - no challenge or action is only a physical challenge - certainly for me, physical challenges are often just as much physical as mental and if I am mentally unhappy, it can and does actually show (and vice versa). Being a mother of a toddler, I not only focus much more on my own health (to keep up with her!), and my daughter's health - physical, mental, social, etc. - but also on the health of the world around her - the people, animals, plants, and things that surround her. We are not islands and each of us can and do impact each other and sometimes in very profound ways.
There should not be a stigma attached to mental health, generally, or with challenges and illnesses. Being able to speak openly about mental health and access resources can help people better spend their time for themselves, their loved ones and their colleagues, and the world around us - pets, plants and animals (including even my felines who may begrudgingly admit that life is better when their cat mommy is happy). So help me raise money while I trek up some mountains and help destimgatise mental health!
