My Story
My wife and I were recently enjoying lunch at our local bistro. At the next table, a mother was explaining the concept of " fundraising" to her young daughter (yes ... I was eavesdropping). It turns out that the teacher of her daughter, has a son, named Alfie. Sadly, Alfie has been diagnosed with aplastic anaemia (bone marrow disease). When the mother explained that the fundraising involved a swimming challenge, my ears perked up. I rudely interrupted and asked the mother for more details, explaining to her that I am very much involved in swimming/coaching, and offering to help in any way I could. That evening I got a call from Patrice, a well-known Hong Kong open water swimmer. We had a long chat, exchanged ideas and decided to meet that coming weekend to start training the kids. My daughter Charlotte and some of her teammates have also joined in coaching and supervising the training sessions.
The Challenge - swim around Middle Island approximately 2.5km of open water swimming.
It has been three weeks now since we started training, sometimes in quite tough conditions (storms, rough waters, occasional jellyfish and sadly a lot of plastic). This EXTRAORDINARY group of 9-10 year old kids have had to overcome the fear and anxiety of swimming in open water (beyond the shark nets) and have shown incredible spirit, dedication and most of all heart, in support of their teacher and her son.
Funds are being raised to support Alfie's medical
bills. In these difficult times, any act of kindness would greatly appreciated.
