Hasina* is a 12-year-old girl from Pakistan who came to
Malaysia with her family to seek asylum over four years ago. Around three years
ago, Hasina developed a rare foot deformity that prevents her from walking
properly.
Hasina has been diagnosed with hereditary sensory motor neuropathy (HSMN). She suffers from bilateral cavanus deformity and bilateral foot drop.
Her sister Hareem* explains that the doctors have dismissed Hasina’s
case due to their status and the understanding that they will not be able to
afford the costly treatment.
Hasina requires a bilateral solid ankle foot orthotic and a rollator in order to start her path to rehabilitation. Hareem says that if they had money, Hasina’s situation
would have been prevented. Hasina desperately needs support towards
her treatment.
Hasina is a very bright young girl who speaks, reads and
writes in English. She enjoys learning and going to school; however, her
condition has prevented her from continuing her education the past two years.
Her mother is a single mom who earns a living through embroidery work, where she earns as little as RM1 for every cloth she embroiders. Due to their family having very little income, they are unable to pay for the necessary transportation Hasina needs to go to school due to her health condition. Hasina explains to us that she
is very bored at home all day. When asked what she does all day, Hasina says "sleeping, sleeping, always sleeping". Hasina wishes to be able to play with her friends once her situation improves. Her mother and sister have
tirelessly tried to find supports and alternative ways to improve Hasina’s life. Her sister Hareem states that, “if Hasina can walk, she can continue her life and go to
school”.
The quotation photo we have attached indicates the medical equipment Hasina needs in order to improve her situation and health, thus allowing her to continue her education at MSRI's school with her friends. We hope that you are able to financially contribute to help Hasina. The money raised is not just for the equipment, but to help her family during their resettlement process.
